Wifi Connected, Have IP Address, Do Not Have Internet ?. (Solved I hope !)

Trying to get my daughters laptop ready for uni next month I wanted to try to see if it would connect to a public wifi, I went down to our local pub and used there connection (wpa with key) with there permission.
Having first removed all the network adapter's in pcc I set up a new connection in pcc, entered the key, it connected and gave me an ip address but said it was not connected to the internet !, I have tried this several times, tried a reboot, still no internet.
I could only remember a few terminal commands.(I have copied 'coffeetime's' tips above into a 'text' file for the next time I go to try it again).

Googling "wlan0 reason=3" produced http://azitech.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/deauthenticating-reason3/.

Don't know whether it will help, but seems to be a common problem across many distros.

DId you check if others could go online? maybe you went there when their internet connection was down 

not being able to go online while you are connection could be caused by a misconfigured DNS server.

when you are there, also run the following command to see what DNS address is in use

cat /etc/resolv.conf

also run these two commands and post their output

ping -c 5 8.8.8.8

ping -c 5 google.com

If both return 100% package lost then the problem is with the network connection the internet

if the first pass but the second fail then the problem is with the DNS server.

If I remember on 'Net Aplet' in system tray
IP = 192.168.1.16
Gateway = 192.168.1.1
DNS = 192.168.1.1

No pings to external address's and web browsers reporting no connection.

I did try http://192.168.1.1 in a browser for access to there router but it was password protected.

I have had this sort of thing at home and have to go to the routers settings page and click 'connect' but I can not do that on a public wifi. !.

The times I have run into this situation at hotels, etc, it has usually been a DNS problem  I have memorized my home DNS servers and plug that in.  And usually I'm in.  My home network tries to default to  my router for DNS (192.168.1.254) I have changed that to my  ISP public servers and the problem has gone away at home.

Tried all above but still no internet connection, I'm going to a different location next to try there.
Also tried running a Live CD 'PCLinuxOS 2012.02 KDE' just the same results.
I did ask the pub landlady if she would re-boot her router but did not want to do that because of the tills.

So the problem is at the pub. You said previously you can reach their router configuration page so your traffic does reach the router.Your internet traffic is just not sent to the internet.

They possibly have it protected by MAC address if it is not available to the public generally.

I'm going to add  a note on this post as it may help others.

On this same laptop I had a similar problem as above (WiFi connected but no internet connection ) and doing a 'Google' search I found one post that said he had problems when 'VirtualBox' or 'Wine' was installed so I had a look and they where both installed so I uninstalled them as we did not use them and the internet problem has gone.

Sounds like the connection at the pub is not giving you a dns entry.

Try using Open DNS severs and then see if you can get on line.
