rc.xml applications settings/menu transparency
« on: August 03, 2012, 02:53:00 PM »
I am trying to solve a couple modifications to my home rc.xml file that have eluded me thus far.
Both are concerning startup options for individual applications under the <applications> tag.

Firstly, I am trying to set an app to launch at a particular window size. I've browsed through the OpenBox wiki pages on Bindings and came across the syntax for the MoveResizeTo action, but I'm unsure how to or if it's even possible to attach this to an application startup. I'm not very familiar with X window commands and perhaps this is the solution if someone could point me in the direction of a good tutorial on the subject.

Also, I have been using the mouse bindings:

Code: [Select]
<mousebind button="Up" action="Click">
        <action name="Execute">
          <execute>transset -p .1 --inc</execute>
        </action>
      </mousebind>

      <mousebind button="Down" action="Click">
        <action name="Execute">
          <execute>transset -p .1 --dec</execute>
        </action>
      </mousebind>

to manually inc/dec the transparency of individual windows and would like to know if this, too, can be applied to startup options for individual applications.

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

Are you using Openbox as your desktop? Or are you using LXDE?
Do you understand how to work with XML scripting? Do you have a link to the wiki page?

I'm using Openbox 2011.11, the version posted by melodie here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=99675.0

I have a limited understanding of XML and could use a good tutorial. I assume you mean the wiki page for XML?

I mean the file you want to edit is an XML file. Editing XML can be viewed in 2 ways from my experience; it can be easy and work perfectly after one edit, or it can be a nightmare after what appears to have been and easy and straightforward edit. There is no way to determine, so far as I know, which it will be at the start.

So to proceed, open rc.xml with your text editor. Click File > Save As >> "rc.xml.bak." You should now have 2 copies of the file, rc.xml and rc.xml.bak. ***The second one is your backup in case something goes horribly wrong; in which case, delete the 'bad' file and rename   rc.xml.bak to rc.xml will put you back to your start.***
Next edit rc.xml as you read on the Openbox wiki. Test the changes.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear about my request. I've been making modifications to the rc.xml file for some time now and have read through the Openbox Wiki page at length. That part I'm clear on, but I'm unable to find anything that helps me with the modifications I want to make, namely setting specific window sizes and transparency per application at launch.  Perhaps I've overlooked something...

This is the page I've been refereing to: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Applications#Example_of_per-app_settings

Do you know of another? Thank you for your replies!

assuming xcompmgr handles your compositing  create a new enrty in obmenu and add this as command , one can also be added to openbox autostart file directly above tint2
~/.config/openbox/scripts/xcompmgr.sh set                                                             = transparency
~/.config/openbox/scripts/xcompmgr.sh setshaded                                                =trasparency & fading
~/.config/openbox/scripts/xcompmgr.sh setshadowshade                                        = transparency,fading,shadows

add these entrys to obmenu , good luck .
