trying gnome 3(SOLVED)
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:57:09 AM »
i tried to install gnome shell to try gnome 3

i added the packages i believed it would help me try it

when on kdm i selected it and loaded it

the desktop has no elements and the only thing that works is ctrl+alt+del to restart or shutdown

once restarted kdm loads it again since kdm loads again the last loaded desktop

i can call a cli but i don't know what to do here, i tried to load synaptic to uninstall gnome 3 but it can't load since gnome 3 is not releasing the display server

what can i do to call again kdm or select kde to load again?

I would try this: (no guarantees ;))

login as root
type 'init 3'
type 'kdm'

that was one of my ideas, i needed to call synaptic to remove kdm or gnome, when you reinstall kdm it removes theme and configs, what was the problem

but gnome didn't let me open synaptic

fortunately i could use, for the first time in 5+ years the last resource, apt-get

so, i wanted to remove the problem and the problem was gnome, i removed it with this command

i called from console apt-get remove gnome-shell

restarted and got system back to normal

thank you for your suggestions

about int 3, this didn't made a difference, but i remember that it worked in the past when i used the boot codes, maybe i was already in runlevel 3? or am i confusing things?

To get running the Gnome3 desktop is a 64bit install needed.

There  some gnome3 packages available but those needed for some packages to run on 32bit (GTK3 apps) like Fotoxxx.

Gnome3 is broken on 32bit!

The packagers who build the Gnome packages have retired.
Hopefully there some volunteers in the near future to do it!
Maybe a answer comes from the PCLinuxOS Gnome Community at linuxgator.org.

today i was bored, so i decided to install lxde and selected task-lxde on synaptic

very nice, loads fast and looks nice

then i logged out and found that i suddenly had a couple more options than lxde and kde4, i had also gnome and openbox

i was a bit confused since task-lxde just used 10 mbs if i remember correctly so i clocked gnome

it was gnome 3   ???

fortunately i had this post and could do a different technique, apt-get to remove kdm and then reinstall it  ;D

after that i removed everything gnome related, i had gnome3 and gnome2 packages, no idea from where or how i installed it, don't think that lxde would install gnome3 files isn't?
