Lost all sound
« on: July 31, 2012, 09:36:59 AM »
Using latest kernel 3.2.6 and KDE 4.8  .When I installed the new ops system all was fine. Then the other night I notice no sound when using the Tv application, and then the radio had no sound ..It seems something is either muting the sound or putting the master volume to 0. I have used several mixer utilities and ALSACONf to ensure the proper card is seen and driver is installed but no joy and now totally no sound. I am looking for suggestions before I kill the system and re-install...

in synaptic we have kernel 2.6.38.8 and kernel 3.2.18

i can't find 3.2.6 kernel, how did you installed it?

about your system, what video card and sound card do you have?  have you used pulseaudio?

give us as much information as possible

Sorry about the lack of info I was at the office dealing with many other issues and did not have the info.\

My system at home has the following :

Sound by Creative Lab - SB Audigy - Driver EMU10k1 (Alsa) Pulse enable
Video by NVdia GEforce 6200
TV card Generic - Philips chip (SAA7131, 7133, 7135 Video Broadcast Decoder)Kernel 3.2.18   KDE version 4.8.3

Now the latest update!! Logged in last night as ROOT and was able to get the sound card to work. I ran alsaconf to get the card and driver recognized and then the mixer to get the master volume setup...

Then I logged out and signed in on my desktop and no sound. I know the sound card is functioning so I think I have a situation where the system on my desktop is shutting down the master volume switch.
(Don't know why?)

On the TV card in both root and my desktop,  the card was not functioning and I suspect a dead card.....
(More testing to be done)

and so it goes..Hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

Install PulseAudio from the repo ........  use package   task-pulseaudio  to get the required files.

Also install  pavucontrol

Follow the instructions about enabling PulseAudio and rebooting.

Immediately launch pavucontrol -  PulseAudio Volume Control  from the sound menu. Check first the Configuration tab.

In PA Vol Ctrl you can manage what sound devices receive the sound being generated from each application.

When you wish you can disable any sound device if you wish to check another etc etc. - on the Config Tab

The relative volumes are adjustable on the Playback Tab.

Update- As instructed I installed the task- pulseaudio package and pavucontrol..When I launched pavucontrol all I got was a message "Connection Failed - connection refused". Failing this direction I looked at the parameters from the root desktop where the sound card is recognized and working and went back to my desktop and copied and applied the same parameters. Success!!!! the sound card is now active and working properly.

As for the TV card still no joy and I will be doing some analysis on it tonight. The TV and radio capabilities are not being recognized. There is the possibility the tv card is dead.

More info to come....

Can you post the details of what you did so that others looking for a solution might also have the information?

Thanks.

The error from PulseAudio indicates it was not running properly.
It can happen sometimes .... I had occasion to have to disable it in PCC, reboot, enable it and reboot again to get it working. Obviously something did not 'take' the first time around.
For users with multiple sound devices PA is a huge aid to managing those devices and the sound streams to and from them.
It is unfortunate it did not function for you.

More news;
I logged in to my desktop last night and no sound. My enthusiasm was premature!! Tried the "root" desktop and no problems. Sound in all applications..Before starting I reseated both the sound card and the TV card to make sure they were well rooted. Connection from the TV card to the sound card was verified. All checked out in the box.  In "root" both sound card and TV card are functioning. Further in either desktop the alsamixer gui will not start as well pavucontrol still will gives me the error.  I reintalled them and still the same problem. (Don't know why?)

I will again tackle my desktop and try to solve this situation, short of killing every desktop and starting fresh.

Many thanks for your help. If I succeed in solving this I will let you know

Take Care

This might give you an idea what I mean about managing the devices from PA Vol Control

Question;
Before I blow up the whole system and reinstall everything..If I just deleted my myself and my desktop, reboot the system and then create a new user  and desktop would this cure my sound headaches with the new desktop? ROOT desktop is fine and everything works.

You don't need to delete your present account to create a new one ......  and one will not interfere with the other .....  so definitely worth trying.

Back at it over the weekend. Instead of blowing up my desktop I concentrated in getting the ROOT desktop to work properly. I then unloaded the new kernel 3.2.18 and reinstalled the previous kernel 2.6.38. Got my desktop now to recognize everything . Once all was re-established I unloaded the old kernel and reinstalled the new kernel and presto all is fine with the exception now ALSAMIXER will not load..Strange!!!!I use the regular kmix to recalibrate the sound parameters.

It seems to me an incompatibility with ALSA or Pulse Audio and the new kernel..

And life goes on!!!
