[SOLVED]Help with finding programs please
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:35:51 PM »
Greetings, I am a linux newbie and I have gotten the hang of most of the basics. One thing I do need help with however is i installed a program off the synaptic package manager, a program called mangler, and it hasn't appeared in the applications list anywhere in my (and I know this is probably the wrong term for this) start menu. This is the only program I have had this issue with, and I had attempted to run it from where it was in the usr/bin folder, but it did nothing. Any suggestions to help a newbie out?

For anyone who needs to know, mangler is a ventrilo compatible client.

Press Alt+F2 and then press "mangler" in the box. This will start your program.

If you want to add a shortcut to the menu, right click on the menu icon and select "Edit Applications".
Then create a New Item (for example, under the Internet category), name it as you want and in the "Command" field browse your way to the location of the program (in this case /usr/bin/mangler). You can edit its icon too if you want.

Thanks much for the help, got it up and working now.

Now another question regarding the same program now that I have it working. Again this seems to be the only program that does it. When I have mangler open it works fine, until such time as I start up another program that wants to play sound. Then mangler goes silent. Haven't figured out why after an hour of screwing around with sound settings. Again it seems to be the only program that does it. If I play music, and Firefox is making noise neither of those cut out. I am guessing this is more a question for someone familiar with Mangler itself.

Or if someone knows of a different Ventrilo replacement that works better, I would be open to that as well.

KMenu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer.

Hardware > Sound Configuration.

Enable Pulse Audio > OK. Wait for the PA packages to be installed.

Logout/Login. Try your sound again.

I installed pulseaudio, and I installed the pavucontrol. Now I am getting another error message when I attempt to start the pulse audio volume control. Connection failed: Connention refused.

Enabling PulseAudio in PCC - Hardware - Sound  requires a reboot, not just a log out.

Does Mangler have settings for the audio?

Maybe it is using OSS and not ALSA or Pulse (if enabled) ?

I did a reboot, two of them actually, once after enabling pulse audio in the sound cofiguration windows for both my sound drivers, and then again after installing pavucontrol since it didn't work with the first reboot.

As for mangler, yes it uses OSS which is the only option it gives me to use, otherwise I would select ALSA being that is what most other programs use.

OSS was (is?) limited to one sound stream at any time ....  which might explain why you have observed the sound problem.

Then that would explain a few things, guess it is back to asking if there is another ventrilo compatible client that I can download and use instead of mangler. Unless I would just be better off running ventrilo in wine.

Also remains the problem of not being able to access my pulse audio volume controls.

There might be some package in the repository which would allow OSS to communicate with PulseAudio .....  not sure as I never needed such. I sometimes uninstall all OSS packages.

I will look for something with that, though it won't do me much good because of not being able to access the volume control, is there some sort of command I need to input to get it to come up?

I would select   task-pulseaudio  for reinstallation  and also mark any other installed pulseaudio packages for reinstallation.
Make sure Mangler is not running and is not set to launch on boot.
Disable PulseAudio; reboot; enable PulseAudio and reboot again ......  doing nothing else between reboots!

After the desktop has settled ......  give it a little time .....  check PulseAudio Volume Control again.

BTW ....  Kmix will continue to work.

Post back results.

Still not having any luck with pulse audio after a few reboots, think I will give up on it for now. Thank you for your replies and I will have to see about getting plugins for mangler so it starts working.

Pity :(

Make sure you disable it in PCC - Hardware - Sound  if not using it.
