The original config file is ""somewhere"" deep in the inners of the beast.
This file is probably a read only ( or something like that ) for the following reason.
If I go into KmenuEdit, I can restore anytime I wish so to original settings with one single click.
So, therefore that original file can/is/will be not altered.
Also, this original file has to be a reference of kind when Synaptic updates ( or something like that )
I know there is a connection.

When you modify the menu with drag and drop, a second file gets created in /home/xena/.config/menu. This /menu is not there by default. It also gets created after the first time you modify. After that, it does not disappear, but will be empty if you restore to original settings.

I am not sure what you mean by 'drag & drop' in this context ......  do you mean re-arranging the order of the entries or the sections they are in or something like that?

I have added several .desktop files to /usr/share/applications/kde4/ for personal entries ---  small scripts etc of my own.
It is easy to add & delete entries .....  or just move the .desktop files as I mentioned in the previous post.

The ideal would be to have a second menu which pointed, not to /usr/share/applications/kde4/, but to some other location which could contain ONLY the entries one wanted to display.

BTW ....  I see no /home/<user>/.config/menu in my install .....  will have to look further  :( .....  even though I have edited the main menu a lot.

Plenty to play with yet  :D

EDIT:
/home/user/.local/share/applications/

is the location of my user settings for the menu  ;)

Edit: I have edited this from my English to standard English
Yes, do the following:
-right-click on PC icon or Lancelot icon ( in the bottom left corner )
-A window pops up with:<configure shortcuts--Menu editor--Unlock widgets--maybe others >
-Click on <menu editor>
-A window < KDE Menu Editor > pops up.
-Change <other> to< just18>
.........>((Other is right at the bottom--You can change the name in the panel right on top at the right))
-Drag any folder(( with content )) or a single file from any folder to <Just18>
-On top -left.......click on save

Your menu on the desktop has changed now
Go back to desktop
Left click PC icon or Lancelot icon
Look for your name...the rest is as original ( minus what you dragged away )
Note: drag slowly.....not the speed we are used to.

If you want the original back...just go top again and click " Restore to system..."

The ..../menu is not there original after install.
Only after you have used KmenuEdit .

Yes, do the following:
-right-click on PC or Lancelot
-click menu editor
-change <other> to< just18> ((-- change in panel right side on top ))
-Drag any folder or file to Just18
-on top -left.......click:save

OK, I am rather slow this morn ...  obviously ........  I don't use Lancelot so using the main menu .....

Right Click
... no 'menu editor' .....  so select "Edit Applications"
There is an "Other" entry in the list .......  do you mean rename it?
Assume renamed, then drag a file or folder from where?  Dolphin?
That didn't seem to work   :(

I have edited my previous text .
If you have still a problem, I will have to make pictures,
so that we are sure what we are talking about.

Sorry. Sometimes I write down my thoughts, but choose my words poorly.

You are working from another applet than me, but yes, it's the same menu.
Mine says< menueditor>, but it's same panel

No, one of the folders just above <Other>, which you just renamed

With Lancelot you can move "Menu Folders" onto the desktop and from there the icon can be dragged onto the panel or it can be placed on the panel directly by-passing the desktop move.

Also, the 4 "modules" on the left hand side (see pic below) can be dragged individually onto the desktop and/or panel

The following is a screenshot of 4 "regular" panel icons

If I now drag, say the Computer "Module" and then the Contacts "Module" from the left hand side and place them on the panel we  should now show 6 icons: (Blue Folder icon - Computer and Envelope/Mail Icon is Contacts)

The image below shows what's available after clicking the blue "Computer" icon which was just added

This can also be done with a Lancelot Menu "folder"

Which is especially useful if the menu folder has been created and customized with a list of chosen apps.  Plus the newly created panel icons open very quickly.

The alternative method is to use the Shelf Widget (Add Widgets > Categories > Miscellaneous > Shelf)

Drag the Shelf Widget on to the desktop, choose Configure > Add > and choose from the Application Menu or Places etc....

See pic below for available choices

I can move nothing, as in n o t h i n g.
It's so rock-stable-glued as if it's a photograph taken.
I can enlarge it ......

I am sure there is something wrong here.
Give me a few minutes.

If I can not get this right, I will reinstall before I go to bed and let it update during the night

BTW: The Menu Editor is on the far right hand side of the small menu that says:
< Lock session - Leave - Switch user - >>And small icon which gives 3 options and 'About L...'

Thanks for the nice pictures.
Hereby you have me convinced that I should make pictures too in future, instead of just plain text which can be confusing at best.
Congrats. You are the first one who got me to do that since 5 years ago !

Understood ......  eventually  Cheesy

No problem.
The fault is entirely mine.
If I wasn't so darn lazy ( or busy or in a hurry ) it would have been clear from the beginning.
Don't worry, I learned my lesson here  8) 8)

Still no go here.
I give it another 30 minutes max.

OK, I got it.
After looking in all the wrong places, and deleting another 10 new activity icons, I got accidental back in KmenuEdit. There was a whole list of folders with nothing in it.
Deleting them and pressing restore to sys.. did do the job.

I can now play with Lancelot.

I will not abandon the original exercise, but hold on ( with KmenuEdit) till I have the new iso installed which no doubt will come before Christmas  :D

It/s my bed time now.
See you later
