Have fun and I hope you can achieve what you're aiming for
Yes, so far it's going well, but there is a small [size=7
pt]but[/size] I have to check again

-I can get exactly what I want
-I can update and the updates are reflected in the changed Menu
-I can install . All progs are installed but not all show up in the menu
-However, they are there as they work from konsole or < Run command > in the menu.
I have to say, that for this first try I have " on purpose' , very badly dis-figured the original menu.
Next I am going to be a little more sensible , meaning, putting libreOficce with sound , and putting Text editors in video, etc etc, is really pushing it,..non?

I backed up the changed menu
I restored the original
Rebooted ( logout also works of course )
Then re-installed the backup
Logout/in and all is back to the way I want

That's it for now.
Next I am going to make a more reasonable layout  :D

I was about to suggest the same as Just18, but instead of the "folder view" widget I would. go for the "Quick Access" widget as it allows you to browse in the folder structure.

That way you could create a folder that QuickAccess points to when you click the icon and some subfolders with links to applications, documents, websites or whatever you prefer.

Thanks for pointing me to this.
I have installed a few of them, and I think it's going to be part of my desktop.

remove the KMenu icon from the panel.  It's only a widget. Right clicking on your desktop you can change the desktop settings. Somewhere in the dialogue box you can set the menu to show on right click on the desktop, just like. in Openbox or XFCE.

HTH

I will try later.
I think it's safer for me to do one thing at a time  ;D ;D ;D

I will. Thanks.

I just about finished to figure out (all) what to do and what not to do with with KmenuEdit.
The program itself is dead-simple to use it.
It's drag and drop or if you feel like you can do it manually  ;D
The problem (read:extra work) comes in if you want everything alphabetical.
Also, the drag and drop is shaky. You tell it to do something, but it doesn't always do it the first time. And no, it's not shaky hands or being in a hurry!
But for who want to spend some time on it, it's fine.
You can make many different menus and save each and every one.
?Could? be used in the classroom to restrict what they can access
You know, what they don't see, they don't think about ( or do they ? )
But I don't know yet what will happen if you do a brand new install and want to import the customized backup file? ( if all relevant programs are not installed yet.)
Probably something like: buzz-of.
I just need a batch file that can do the following:
Copy < file> from </home/xena/Documents/bu1 to location /home/xena/.config/menus>
Shouldn't be too difficult.

For a totally different purpose, the QuickAccessBrowser widget will come in handy.
Now I can finally wipe all those Icons from my desktop.
Thanks

Now, back to work.

This thing is going on ice again.
This time for sure !
This morning, when booting up, all was like yesterday, except I was 2 Folders missing.
One which I had labeled < Internet Up / Download > and which contained Thunderbird, Filezilla,
Teamviewer7.
One which I had labeled <PDF Tools > and had various tools for....yes, PDF >
On top of that, when looking in KmenuEdit, I found various 'other' programs now under < hidden >

I do not have the faintest idea why this is , as I am <playing with > things. I am not a coder ! ( Ah, but you knew that already ,isn't it  ;) )

One of the reasons for it could be that this is a test release which has been tampered with on may different ways.(by me)
Another reason could be that Kmenu was not written with << modifications >> in mind, although I do not really believe that myself.
Or, maybe this is why other people are writing 'widgets' to replace Kmenu ?
Another........?,,,,,,,,,,?,,,,,,,,,,,,?
Don't forget, Kmenu is already over 10 years old and...........so on and so on.

So, it's simple.
Exercise is postponed till next or next-next week. End!

Thanks to all who assisted me.
You will be remembered in my prayers.....

Xena .......  I added a second instance of the menu launcher widget to my tray and it appears to display its own settings .....  as in the main one has Recently Used but it appears I can independently turn of that in the second menu widget.

Makes me wonder if it is possible to run two which are completely separate .......  anyone have information on this?

I guess what I mean is .......  is there a means to edit the config of the second instance so that it 'points' to a different 'set' of options/contents?

Xena .......  I added a second instance of the menu launcher widget to my tray and it appears to display its own settings .

That's what I wanted from the beginning, but it didn't manage.
Every time I change something in the one, it changes also in the second one.
Hence my remark to put it on ice till the new iso comes out, whenever that will be.
I got that feeling I am working/feeling/guessing/thinking in the dark.

OK, again, I am talking about things I don't know the first thing about, so, beware  ;D ;D

The original config file is ""somewhere"" deep in the inners of the beast.
This file is probably a read only ( or something like that ) for the following reason.
If I go into KmenuEdit, I can restore anytime I wish so to original settings with one single click.
So, therefore that original file can/is/will be not altered.
Also, this original file has to be a reference of kind when Synaptic updates ( or something like that )
I know there is a connection.

When you modify the menu with drag and drop, a second file gets created in /home/xena/.config/menu. This /menu is not there by default. It also gets created after the first time you modify. After that, it does not disappear, but will be empty if you restore to original settings.

Now, my guess is that there can be only one at a time in /home/xena/.config/menu

Therefore, what I/we want is not possible the "noobs' way.

A solution is to manually create different <applications-kmenuedit.menu> files and put them in different folders ( bu1-bu2-bu3 ) and make kind of a batch file what takes out the manual work

But then, who will need something like that, but me  :o :o :o

I think , instead of chasing ghosts, I am going to stick with one or more of the following:
-Lancelot
-Takeoff launcher widget
-QuickAccessBrowser widget
-Fancy taste widget ( try it for fun )
-application Launcher menu widget

Start  ;D ;D ;D
OK, don't feel bad that I took so much time to enlighten you.
I had to do it for myself, because on Monday I will otherwise remember nothin'-nada-niks nie !
End  ;D ;D

The QuickAccess widget is good .....  but has one failing from my perspective ....... I need to click on the 'folders' to display what they contain, whereas in the original menu a 'mouse-over' will display the contents of the sections.

With that change to QuickAccess I would be quite happy to use it.

/usr/share/applications/kde4/   is where the .desktop files are stored globally.

It is from there that the menu items are populated.

BTW ....  there are 15 Okular .desktop files there ......  I moved 14 of them to a separate directory under
/usr/share/applications/kde4/
and now they do not appear in the menu .....  not even in the .hidden section. I can return them to their correct location if they should be needed.

I have yet to check that Okular continues to work properly, but I suspect it will, as those .desktop files seem to be specific launchers for placing in sub menus and do nothing else .......  still to be proven.

If that is the case there is no need of them at all in PCLOS because of the way the menu is arranged.
