Automatic printer??? (solved)
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:23:03 PM »
I run my desktop in my basement with the printer (HP 5610 all-in-one) attached via usb.  I recently was given a dell latitude d600 laptop, on which I installed KDE 2012.6, and also task-lxde, which is what I normally boot into, connecting wirelessly via the router that the desktop is connected to.  I downloaded a pdf file, and out of curiosity, clicked "file-print" and was greeted by the offer to print on the HP 5610 printer located downstairs!  I have never set up samba on either machine, and didn't know that this was possible without it.  Is this behavior normal?  I hope this provides enough info.....

if i remember correctly samba is not related to share printers, especially if you don't have windows machines in your local network

if you made the printer available as a shared device on your network, yes, it should be normal

in pclinux control center(configure your computer)/hardware/configure printing you can share or not your printer depending on what you want to do with it

I bought an HPOfficejetV40 wireless printer and had to do "nothing" to get it working.

I went to configure the printer and on all three of my installs, it was already there waiting to be used.

I would not be too alarmed by the way it worked.  ;) ;D
