virtual box won't let me install win7 SOLVED
« on: July 28, 2012, 05:57:55 PM »
I have the latest version of pclos, fully updated. I installed vbox (4.1.18) from the repo, and installed win 7. It worked.....
Then I decided I'd clean out the drive, reformat etc. Now when I tr to install win7, I get "windows files loading" followed by "error" the error being "cannot install a 64 bit syste on this processor."
So what have I done differently?
m/b is Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV
with Intel G620 LGA1155 running at 2.6G,
8G of memory (Which shows up as half that in the memory setting options for vbox panel, so I choose just under 2G, and select "1 processor", not that that seems to change the end result.)
I have tried various routes of installation, ie choice of task-vbox, or the other selections in the repo, but all roads lead to the same place.
What have I got wrong anyone?
..... please!!!

So, its a 64 bit CPU.
Things worked earlier, now the dont.
Something changed. Did you install win7 on the same version of virtualbox? did you change any virtualbox default settings?Did you change any BIOS settings?

what does "cat /proc/cpuinfo" give you?

Open the VirtualBox settings for your Windows7 VM. Select General in the left pane of the Settings window. Make sure the Windows7 version selected is 64bit. Next, select System in the left pane, Processor tab in the right pane. Make sure Enable PAE/NX is checked. You can install and run a 64bit OS guest even on a 32bit host, as long as the host's processor supports PAE.

Brilliant!!!! Select win 7 64 bit and it works!
I don't remember selecting it first time, but then..... my wife says there's lots of things I don't notice....
