I have found this work around.

Firstly, I installed  Dolphin from the repositories via Synaptic.

Then, I logged in as Root, and, using Dolphin, went to the files that I wished to change the Write ability for the user. The window for permissions in Dolphin is much more user friendly. I changed "Others" to be able to "View and modify content". I checked "Apply to all subfolders and their contents".

I logged out and then back in again as user.
When I then opened such an altered file with Libre Office, I found that the "Read Only" label was missing at the top of the page. I could then alter the file and save it.

Until PCmanFM gets altered back along the lines mentioned by djohnston, I will use Dolphin as a workaround.

Yeah - that would be a work around.  I rather would not install Dolphin with all it's qt and kde dependencies - kind of defeats the purpose for me of having a light DE.

At the moment I just press F4 and change permissions and ownership via the terminal.  It's not something I have to do very often, so that doesn't upset me too much.

However - we need PCManFM in normal working order again - which probably needs to happen upstream ...

It's not an upstream problem. PCManFM version 0.9.10 works correctly elsewhere.

Good Job! Updated and it works again !
Just wondering though, Is there any chance that the changes could be made to work recursively on the other directorys/files contained within the directory/file that has been changed ?
Really do appreciate it and T.I.A. :)
Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.
