PCLOS comes with a lot of system services turned on by default. When I used to run Slackware it came with most services turned off by default. For simplicity's sake I would like everything turned off that I don't need. I have a simple desktop, a printer, a wired DSL modem and speakers. I'm not running any servers, I don't use bluetooth or any wireless connections, don't do any online gaming. All I do is write, print using CUPS, listen to music, surf online, download and send email using POP3/SMTP. Really simple stuff.

I know I need (or want) alsa, cups, iptables, keytable, kheader, numlock, shorewall, sound, xfs. There are a number of other services running that I don't know if I need or not.

Which services are necessary or recommended for my situation? Everything else gets turned off.

Thanks.

why do you want them off?

Are you short on memory? cpu cycles?

I would probably add the acpi one since it deals with hardware and could help in making sure your hardware is not pushed past their acceptable range, the rest, you can turn them off and see what happens.

.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

Thanks for the tip about acpi.

I want unneeded services off because on a couple of occasions I've experienced long hang time during booting as some service or another had problems, and it turned out to be something I didn't even need or use. Why have daemons running for things like wireless when I'm not using wireless? the fewer bells and whistles, the fewer things to break.
