pcmanfm missing along with other features[SOLVED]
« on: July 25, 2012, 02:03:33 AM »
fresh re-install after having this same issue.  PCmanFM disappears from user#1 after installing thunderbird and a few other pkgs.  Desktop is also gone, just a grey screen.  Taskbar still present.

PCmanFM is present for user#2, and root version also seems to work.

Would like this to work or find another file manager to use.  Any ideas?

More information is needed. ---
Fresh re-install from which ISO? Which packages did you install with thunderbird? Did you perform a full upgrade before you installed thunderbird and the other packages?
By taskbar, do you mean the panel? The taskbar can only display if the panel is working. (it is the part that displays which apps are open)

mini lxde 12.06 iso.  Taskbar at bottom of screen is present.  Perhaps that is what you call a panel?

I would also like to figure out how to add the Thunderbird launcher to that 'panel'?

yonnie,
You didn't answer all questions. ---
Which packages did you install with thunderbird? The answer to this is important! A complete list is needed.
Did you perform a full upgrade before you installed thunderbird and the other packages?

The panel holds the application launch bar (left side), the pager (center left) the taskbar (center right) and the system tray (right side). The application launch bar has the menu and various application icons. The pager is used to switch between virtual desktops. The taskbar shows which applications are open - at present, it is showing firefox, PCManFM and leafpad here. The system tray has the clipboard manager, volume control, net applet and clock.
I hope that clears it up for you.

Right click on your desktop and choose Desktop Preferences from the menu. Set your wallpaper.

I started-up synaptic after install and did a reload, mark upgrades and apply.  A number of items then downloaded and updated.

I installed Thunderbird, Gambas, Geda and Qcad, not all at same time, but sequentially as I couldn't recall all of what I wanted.  Forgot to check for desktop existence between installs as I wasn't expecting an issue.

And thanks for helping me find the magic launcher maker.  What was the 'locker chant in MIB?  "All hail 'K"!"?

I have already tried re-installing pcmanfm, openbox and lxdecc.  User#2 still seems to have a desktop and a working pcmanfm, user#1 don't.

Thanks for answering the questions.
From user#2 ---
Menu > More Applications > Terminals > LXTerminal  >>> enter these commands in sequence:
su      type <Enter>
give root password at the prompt      type <Enter>
The prompt will change from $ to #.
Next command:
cp -R /home/user#2/.config /home/user#1/      type <Enter>
If you are asked if you want to overwrite, answer yes to all.
>>> Substitute user#1 and user#2 with the actual user names. Note the dot "." before config. This indicates that the directory named "config" is hidden. <<<
Next command:
exit      type <Enter>
and again:
exit      type <Enter>

Log out of user#2. Log in to user#1.

Didn't fix it.  terminal message: cp omitting directory.  Didn't say which one.

I'm noticing some odd numbers for user and group id's.  Whole problem could be me from setting up during installation.  Content that should be in user#1 also in user#2 etc... Going to re-format and start over.

Thanks for the fish!
