You'll never guess what the issue is.
This laptop T60 has a hard switch in front of it for the wireless to turn on and off. I switched it on and it appears to be working now.  I will shut down laptop and power up to make sure all is ok.

Update .... after a complete shutdown and power up wireless works .

Thank you so much for taking the time to help out.  I didn't think that the switch was off to think of it. The simple things are always the solution.

There is always a gain in most endeavors

Now we know "command failed: Network is down (-100)" error with "iw" command can come from a hardware switch on laptops.

Now you know kernels must manually be updated and you have a newer one. I would say it was a worth effort  :D

You can use the new kernel for a while and if you are happy with it, you can go back to synaptic and uninstall the old one.

If you want to change the older of kernels in the boot up screen or change the text on kernels, you can do that by starting pcc( pclinuxos control center )->boot->setup boot system and continue from there.

There is an entry in the menu list that will clean your package list. Its called dupe clean or something.Run it and it should remove those dublicates.

can you try to go to synaptic and manually remove those packages.

For example search for "google-talkplugin" and remove the older version.

Do the same for the remaining packages, the list is now small enough to do it manually

Well that took care of those.
Other question I have if  there is a way to control power management for the laptop.  On battery the screen stay bright for about an hour then screen went very dim and no key would bring it back.  The battery indicator on the laptop itself was still green.

i dont know anything about power management.

I advise you start a new thread and discuss the power management problem there. Those who know something about it will most likely not read your problem in this thread since it has nothing to do with the thread heading and the problem is raised deep into the thread.

Well that took care of those.

If I may point it out without intent to offend you, this is why the original post in this thread should now be marked [SOLVED] in the subject line.  The original problem for which this thread was opened has been addressed.

(Note: the emphasis above is mine.)

And this is why you should open a new thread.  There are several packages in Synaptic that relate to power management, and each desktop environment has different features to manage power options, but no one with real expertise is likely to see you question here, since it is past the point in the thread where you mention your wireless problem has already been solved, and the subject line doesn't point to power management issues.

I know it's a bit of a pain to think in this way - that each problem needs a separate thread, but it's done so we can help make better sense of the forum, so that threads can be more easily referred back to by future readers in search of solutions that have already been found.

We're here to help.  Help us help you and everyone else, please.
