how old is the unit?  more than 5 years?

if you can get a borrowed external dvd burner, this could give us more information here

You would just waste 5 more minutes to make an .iso and then try to burn it to a dvd. Just to be sure. Why don't you want to try that solution?

It's 3 or 4 yrs old, but I believe the burner was upgraded after-market by the previous owner.

As I said before, it won't play in my standard dvd player if I do that. I'd only waste yet another disc.... Besides, the file format is irrelevant because k3b simply won't burn. I just need to know why I'm getting the error & how to prevent it.

My first suggestion was to try another burner app because k3b is not the best solution, please try that

I did, & they didn't work. It's probably my burner after all.... I'll try to clean it & see what happens.
