K3b- TAO Writing Mode?
« on: July 19, 2012, 04:17:59 PM »
I've just borked 2 brand new discs because K3b is telling me to use the TAO writing mode. But that option isn't there! What do I do?

TAO means track at once and if i remember correctly it is meant to be used with audio cds mostly

I am the proud owner of a new coaster after trying to burn an image to a CD-R recently.  I was also advised to use TAO.  Look at the bottom left of the snapshot.  Click the thumbnail to see the full-sized image.

What's DAO and TAO ?

Disk At Once and Track At Once refer to how a CD is burnt by the burner. With DAO the CD is burnt in one continuous stroke of the laser without gaps and without turning the laser off. With TAO the laser turns on writes the first track then turns off, it then finds track two and turns back on writes track two before turning off once again. The same goes for every track on the CD the laser turns on and off. You can watch this happening when you burn a CD with TAO, watch the writing LED and you'll see it turning on and off multiple times. These gaps in between the tracks caused by the laser turning on and off can cause a CD not to play in a older CD player. For maximum compatibility a CD should always be written in DAO and the CD closed and finalized in the one stroke of the laser. Not all CD burners can burn in DAO, all SCSI burners can and newer IDE burners can also. Once again SCSI had the technology first. Sub channels is something that IDE is only just beginning to get that SCSI has had for ages. Sub channels are areas on a cd that are between the tracks, these areas can be used to store data. Some software uses this area for copy protection as most consumer cd burners cant read/write this sub channel information. White book CD's are an example of cd's that use sub channels

I'm trying to burn a movie to a DVD. I'm using a 4.7 GB DVD+ disc, & attempted to burn at 4x & 2.4x. The error occured mid-burn both times, & the process was cancelled.

I'm not trying to burn an iso. I'm trying to burn a movie, as I stated above.
It appears I have KDE version 4.6.5. I haven't received any updates for that since.

I'm trying to burn a movie

You need to explain what this means to you because obviously it means something different to others.

What format is "the movie" in?

Do you have a full file set if not an ISO?

Is your aim to make a DVD that will play in a similar fashion to one you would buy, or do you just want to store a movie file as data on the DVD?

A better explanation of what you are trying to achieve, with what exactly is the source,  will help others to understand what might be happening.

If you could provide more information, people may be able to help you. As T6 and Just18 have asked, what format is the film in? MPEG4, MKV, divx, xvid etc.

As I said above, It's in DVD format. I just need to burn it, but I keep getting the error mid-burn. How do I prevent this?

How large is the movie package you are trying to burn?
