Just re-checked nluug, which re-loaded as per specification, but I noted that under 'new in repository' Synaptic reported 11494 packages.  I presume this rather large total is a side-effect of a re-build of the repository?

Yup, it can also happen after doing a "reload" after switching from one repo mirror to another....
