found the problem.. its the whole folder that I had copied from my backup drive onto my home folder.. just tried a few songs and movies from the backup drive and they play just fine..  ??? ??? ???

what ?  did the copying get corrupt somehow ?

Maybe the new location is not being read correctly for some reason - as in failing to get immediate access when needed .....  that might cause the problem .....

Great, glad it's resolved.

I hate to say this but they might be seriously fragmented, like
75% instead of just 1 or 2 percent, which is not supposed to
happen in Linux, but many, many updates over time can do so eventually.
Can't think of anything else, I'd try the copy over then.

deleted the whole folder..  I have begun to copy in increments from my backup drive.. checking as I go along . so far its been without any problems ..
