« on: March 12, 2013, 09:03:04 AM »
Have Just installed PCLinuxOS-KDE 2013.02 and it's looking sweet.....

But,

Weirdly I can't find any mention of 3D desktop in any of the configurations. Whats up with that? Why no 3D any more?

For KDE you can set 3d type effects in:

Config Your Desktop > Workspace Appearance and Behavior > Desktop Effects - All Effects Tab

In the same location but on the Advanced Tab

Set the Composting Type to  Xrender

and the QT Graphic System to Native

Press Apply

If that doesn't work try setting the Composting Type to OpenGL  and Press Apply

If that doesn't work try other combinations

OpenGL/Raster
XRender/Native
XRender/Raster

Alternatively you could open Synaptic and install task-3ddesktop (Metapackage for 3D desktop)

which will install

ccsm (version 0.8.5-1pclos2012) will be installed
compiz (version 0.8.8-1pclos2012) will be installed
compiz-decorator-gtk (version 0.8.8-1pclos2012) will be installed
compiz-fusion (version 2012.0-1pclos2012) will be installed
compositing-server-common (version 2011-1pclos2011) will be installed
compositing-wm-common (version 2012-1pclos2012) will be installed
drak3d (version 1.27-3pclos2011) will be installed
gnome-desktop (version 2.32.1-2pclos2011) will be installed
gnome-menus (version 2.30.5-1pclos2010) will be installed
libcompiz0 (version 0.8.8-1pclos2012) will be installed
libcompizconfig-python (version 0.9.5.92-2pclos2012) will be installed
libcompizconfig0 (version 0.8.8-1pclos2012) will be installed
libglitz1 (version 0.5.6-3pclos2010) will be installed

Alt+Shift+F12 to enable desktop effects.
Transparant taskbar should be vissible and Ctrl+F8 for multi desktop view.
And of course Menotu's Config Your Desktop > Workspace Appearance and Behavior > Desktop Effects - All Effects Tab for all your 3D settings.

GeForce 8400 GS on this box ;)

I picked - install task-3ddesktop (Metapackage for 3D desktop)

unfortunately it went very badly, lost both screens. the xorg.log file said the NVIDIA driver couldn't be loaded. but got everything back now. Tbh I am not quite sure how I got the screens back.
I have found that configuring the NVIDIA display settings in root is better than going through Configure Your Desktop_Hardware_Display and Monitor_Size & Orientation.

Now in the PCC it says "your system does not support 3D desktop effects" ???
