Ethernet card not working on bootup

I am running Pclinux 2009 on a Compaq laptop cq60 the internal Realtek rtl8101
is not detected at startup.  I can start with an external linksys usb dongle. After I am connected
I can change to the Realtek card and it works. Is there some way to correct this?  Most other linux os detect this card.

We PCLinuxOS junkies have a problem, we cannot startup the 2009 version cause we are all updated to or have installed the 2012.12 version.
Advice, fire up the PCLinuxOS KDE 2012.12 LiveDVD to check if your machine works well, if yes install the latest.
For less powered machines use the PCLinuxOS LXDE 2012.12 LiveCD.

Thanks for the reply, I have tried later releases, but I can not get 1024x768 widescreen.
I have to run at higher resolution.  I just like this install.  It works well otherwise.

The native resolution for that screen is 1,366x768, which is the resolution it's designed to work with. 1024x768 is a 4x3 ratio resolution, like that used on a small CRT monitor, not a 16x9 widescreen resolution.

After you make the ethernet connection, check which module it is using; enter that module name into  /etc/modprobe.preload and save the file.
Reboot and see if it now connects on startup.

As mentioned .....  we really have no way to check this old release .......

Thanks op.  I am on full monty now and understand that but 2009 ran at 1024.  Just one more reason I like that os.
I don't know enough about linux to know why the card is not detected before the connection is made with the dongle.

Sorry, I missed your post.   don't know how to find out what module is being used.
When on the dongle, there is nothing in etc/modprobe.preload.  It is not connecting
when I change now.  When I tried modprobe in cli I got a list of switches?

To find the module in use ..... 

Config your Computer - Hardware - Browse & Config Hardware ........  select the device in the left pane, and in the right pane scroll down to the bottom where it will be listed.

You might need to access the contents of   /etc/modprobe.preload   in a text editor, as root.

Thanks, The module is unknown for the dongle and is blank for the realtek.  I guess I will have to keep using the dongle.  It works great other than that.  Now the icon on the taskbar has disappeared, hope it comes back when I re-boot.  At least I got my log-in issues solved.   It's nice to be back.  I started on this forum with  2007 which I really liked.  I still have a couple of installs of 2007.

Tks, It now appears that something has failed in that computer. When I connect either device, other computers connected to the same router go down also.  When I disconnect that computer, the others are ok.   It's early yet, more may be revealed.

Upon further checking, the computer seems to be ok, including the dial-up and internal realtek card.  At the time I installed 2009  the realtek card was not recognized.   I had to use a retro version of Puppy also.  Both were able to use the usb ethernet dongle.   The usb dongle failed.  2010-2012 run on that laptop, as does M$ 7.
