Need help getting a printer to work, and a few more questions
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:15:37 PM »
This is my 1st install of any flavor of linux and I got here by accident thinking it was a generic forum for all flavors. While here I decided to give it a try and I like it so far.
As an aside, I tried making a bootable USB drive and that didn't work, but the bootable CD did.
And it's very pretty.  ;D
In case it's important, the box is running Windows 7 but I think that is irrelevent.
My printer is a Brother HL-2040, connected via USB.
I tried using 3 of the embedded drivers, generic, and I think 2030 and another Brother. No love.
I poked around the Brother site and it suggested that I try
Localhost:631 and add a printer there. Unfortunately it asked me for a user/pw and root/root won't work.
They had what looked like driver files named something like cupwrapper.rpm, and another.deb that I downloaded but have no clue what to do with them.

They had drivers for about 5 different distro, pclinuxos not being one, but I was guessing that another distro might work.

I was amazed at how lightning fast this was. Browsing certain web sites using firefox. Damned fast.

Oh yeah, will apps that are on the C: drive that were installed for Windows, work ?
Things like Quicken.

One more. Reading other folks troubles with printers and the solutions talked about installing 2 apps, printerdrake and task-printing. The post was over a year old so it might not still apply. DomI need to do it ?

And thanks

Have you actually done an install of PCLinux or are you running from the Live CD ?

I am not sure how it runs.
I did not do an install, I created a bootable CD and it runs from there. I guess that I am running from the Live Cd.
Please be patient, there are a lot of new terms I am digesting.
I just read it again and I downloaded the full .iso and used iso recorder to copy it to a cd.

I am not sure that you will get the printer working, while running from the Live CD,
But from what I am reading at the Open Printing web site your printer works (Mostly) using the
HL1250 Driver.
Here is where I found that info : http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-2040

You can try setting your printer up by clicking the PCC icon in the panel ( circle with wrench and screw driver )
then enter the Root password and press the enter key - then click on Hardware - now under Configure Printing and
scanning click on the printer icon.

Be sure to have your printer plugged in and turned on.

As I think of it, that makes sense Ramchu.
Since no install was actually done, any  customization that I do will necessarily be lost.

Ok, now it's time to find a PC where I can do a full install, and find an alternative to Quicken and Turbo Tax.
Thanks again.

Look in the synaptic Package Manager:

KMyMoney: is the Personal Finance Manager for KDE4. It operates
similar to Quicken, supports various account types, categorization
of expenses, multiple currencies, online banking support via QIF,
OFX and HBCI, budgeting and a rich set of reports.

Kraft: is aimed at the demands of small businesses. It is easy to use and limits on a set of most needed features. So it is the solution for creating offers and invoices. With Kraft running your business is done quicker. You will have more time for things which give more pleasure.

Don't know about a replacement for Turbo Tax.

Welcome to the forum Hextejas.
I use TaxAct online to file my tax return. My tax returns are very simple so I don't need to import anything. It may not be a solution for you.
