Missing cmov. Pentium MMX 64mb RAM
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:08:32 PM »
Hello everyone! I hope I have posted this in the right place as I am new to both Linux and this forum. That being said I apologize to bad terminology etc.  ;) So I have been working with Windows for a while now and just put together an old Pentium MMX with 64MB of RAM running Windows 98se. Now I know that 64MB is quite low but that is all I have an not looking to invest a lot in this project. Also my Windows 98 install disk was missing a lot of files needed for drivers and such hence wanted to install a different OS. I have tried Ubuntu, Ubuntu alternate install, Puppylinux, and tinyme. All gave the same install/boot error of "Missing cmov." Any help or tips is greatly appreciated!

You're not going to be successful with a modern distribution. If you really want to continue to use this machine, the best bet is to get a distribution that was compiled for 386's. I believe debian kept 386 versions for a long time.

I used Puppy in a Pentium MMX 200 MHz with 256MB and Nvidia 32 MB video, and that was several years ago.

You can install a Win 98 lite, (no firewall, no antivirus, no internet) and use it for running old games  ;D or play music.

Thank you for the replies! So I got Pupp y 2.14 to work...well kind of. Its very slow but I guess that is expected with 64MB of RAM. Crow- I still have Win98 on there and I will probably use it for my old Windows 3.1 games. :) As for more useful tasks I will try to get this puppy to work or try the other options. Any more tips are very welcome! Also possibly looking to dual boot? Is this even a reasonable route to take? THANKS!

that cpu is not a good option to run current apps when compared to the slowest celeron at 700 mhz an, the ammount of ram is low when compared to a smartphone that at minimum comes with 160mbs

even a web browser will use 30 mbs of ram just to open and kernel with de will need at least 50 on puppy linux

you have to put more ram so swap is not using the hard disk all the time

i personally wouldn't use a machine so old, i don't have enough patience or time to invest in a project that involves such hardware, it is nice to keep using old hardware but this is a 16+ years old hardware and to have a usable desktop you need at least a pentium III

OK, so you are serious  8)  I've used the following:

Try Damn Small Linux   http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/index_es.html  and see how it goes.

There are other options like old versions of Slackware, look for date of release near the release of your machine http://www.slackware.com/

An old version of Dyne:bolic, if you can find it could be very good (I loved that distro)  http://www.dynebolic.org/

The "obsolete" versions of Deli Linux could be good also, they have a weird way for install so make your partitions before  http://deli.tavvva.net/

Some of us had a place to share when we installed Win XP on MMX computers, you can find old posts from me and some friends here   ;D   http://www.emezeta.com/articulos/windows-xp-sp2-en-un-pentium-100mhz#axzz20jqORKXm  IN SPANISH

As a last option, go the Debian route  ;)    I better cut my veins with a plastic spoon    :-\   ;D

Good luck and have fun  :)
