I need a panel! (Solved)
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:09:23 AM »
I'm posting here as the anomaly I've found involves both my stable 32 bit system and my test5 64 bit system, which makes me feel that neither "Software" nor "Testing" would be the right section.

Anyway, lately I get this dialogue on log in to either test5 or my fully updated 32 bit KDE system:

It looks more or less like a tooltip and drops down from the panel at the top of my screen. There is nothing to indicate what or who it is that needs the panel, or why neither of my existing panels will do. I usually just click "OK" and everything is well.

But why do I get the dialogue window or tooltip?

I've tried removing the icons on my panel one by one to see if that would make a difference, but not surprisingly it doesn't. I suppose that If whatever it is that needs a panel already resided on a panel it wouldn't complain.

I'm not sure, but it is possible that this started on my 32 bit install after I had upgraded KDE to 4.8.3. But if so, why don't I get the window on my fully updated test4 install, which is also upgraded to 4.8.3?

All my systems have the same icons on the panels.

This isn't really a problem, but it is a bit of a brain-teaser.

What happened?  Did this just evaporate?  I have dabbled a bit with 64  test5 probably not enough to have hit it?  I was a short visit in 64 test5 toupdate it today and been looking around in Forum and came across your post   :)

On my normal 32 bit system it did indeed just evaporate, and I don't even know precisely when, possibly when I upgraded KDE to 4.9.2 and certainly before this last upgrade to 4.9.5.

On my 64 bit test system (upgraded from test5) the anomaly is still present, which is a bit strange as I don't see it on my other 64 bit system, although these two installs are almost identical at the moment.

Archie suggested that the problem was related to the Veromix widget, but deactivating and even uninstalling Veromix didn't help.

Have you tried deleting the top panel altogether, testing and then recreating it without any content, testing and adding ....  and so on .....

Just a thought that it might be the panel itself causing it .......

I created a new user, and that user did not get the dropdown. I then tried what Just17 suggested: removed my top panel. After a reboot I still got the warning, which perhaps was understandable as at that time my main panel didn't exist any more. So I recreated it with the same widgets as before: and no dropdown.

So this tiny problem seems to be resolved -- apart from the remaining mystery: what was the cause of it? (Unfortunately I only looked at plasma-desktop-appletsrc after the problem had gone away.)

Thanks, Just17 and pinoc.

hi,

this is the bug of panel toggle plasma applet (i tend to just hibernate my computer so it took my a while to discover this). But it's fixed in the 0.2 version of this plasmoid. This version brings also some configuration options.

It's always good to get an explanation, even if it is a partial one. (I take it that you by the "panel toggle plasma applet" mean the plasma applet autohidetoggle. That is the only toggle applet that I have installed on all my systems. The strange thing is just that the problem's gone away before I've been able to upgrade to version 0.2.)

good to hear that fixes the problem but how do you upgrade to version 0.2 when I'm just packaging it?  ;D

That was my point: I hadn't been able to. And the the tiny problem disappeared anyway.

Did you updated the KDE? Maybe they fixed some kind of bug on their side.

Yes, on my 32 bit system the problem went away around the time I upgraded to 4.9.5. But on one of my 64 bit systems the upgrade didn't help. Removing the panel and recreating it as Just17 suggested seemed to be the fix.
