menu icon or launcher for zotero? SOLVED
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:15:51 AM »
hello,

I've just installed Zotero Standalone by using the method at

http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/20262/zotero-standalone-automated-installer-linux/

I can't see any "menu entry" (as specified on the page). Can you please help?

What you installed is not provided by the PCLinuxOS repositories. Probably no one else here has installed what you did. You should try the Troubleshooting section of the Zotero Forum. And be aware that installing anything not from the repositories will render your PCLinuxOS installation unsupportable.

Hi imageraw,

Not all menus are the same (or in the same place) thus it might not be looking in the "right" place.

Firstly, have you done a search of the repos using Synaptic to see whether it's available there? Do a Reload before searching.

You don't say which version of PCLinuxOS you are using - if it's KDE first make sure the Panel Widgets are unlocked.

Now right click on the Menu and choose Edit Applications.

Choose a place where you want the entry to be and then select New Item - give it a name and then drill down to where your application has been installed etc and then do a Save.

On a kind side note; for keeping your system in good shape it's much better not to install apps from outside the repos but to do a New Package Request where it can be looked at by the devs and if/when they have time will package it correctly for you.  This requires you to have 10 or more posts

It's not. I checked.

imageraw,

How do you launch the zotero program? If it's from CLI, give the command you use. As I understand it,

Quote

Before learning what Zotero does, it is important to know what it is. Zotero is an extension for the Firefox web-browser. It runs in its own pane within Firefox, separately from web pages.

Which means you launch it from within the Firefox web browser. It also means there will be no menu item for it. You need to get your answers on the Zotero forum and do a little research on what you installed. This is not a PCLinuxOS application.

I know it's not a pclinuxos application, just hoped it could be seen as a linux-compatible application regardless of where it comes from...but I was probably wrong. Apologies.

I also must've misunderstood the Zotero people when they advised to download Zotero Standalone as a "(...) a separate program without Firefox". I've used the Zotero Firefox extension for a while now. Unless I got it completely wrong (sorry if I did) it's a piece of software that works independently from Firefox I'm trying to get to work. It apparently works with Gnotero (in the reps).

Will do some more research...

imageraw,

I don't know, either. That quote was pulled directly from Zotero's website. The posted thread that you pulled the install script from is where you should be asking. I'm just saying you're more likely to get answers there than here.

Gotcha :)

I've found it: it "ended up" in /home/yourusername/.local/share/applications

it's the Zotero Firefox add-on equivalent = you can use it off-line.

Thanks again for your help :)

You're welcome. I would never have found the answer without going to the Zotero forum, as I don't have that application installed.
