New Monitor Help [SOLVED]
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:57:30 PM »
OK.  I recent got a 24" 1920x120 monitor.  Works great.  Except that the best resolution I can get on it is 1080p (1920x1080).  I have tried the following:

-Running the Control Center app to reset the resolution.
-Setting the resolution through the XFCE Settings Manager (it shows up, it just will not set itself properly).
-Deleting xorg.conf, and then running XFdrake to recreate my settings.
-Tinkering with the NVidia driver.
-Tex's suggestion of setting up XFDrake, then making xorg.conf read-only.

Nothing has worked.  My xorg file looks perfect, but the system is stubbornly attached to its 16:9 resolution.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

the ideal maximum resolution shouldn't be 1920 x 1080?  to give you something like 1080p?

is your monitor 16:9 or 16:10?

if it is a 16:10 then it should give you the resolution you ask, if not the resolution you should use should be 1920 x 1080

do you see image distortion? a bit flat images?, we are talking about just 120 bits height

It does look like that is a 16:10 monitor, so should run 1920x1200.

You say that you tinkered with the Nvidia settings - could you be more specific?

What model of video card are you using, and what driver do you have selected in PCC?  You should be running nvidia-current, version 302.17, if your card is fairly new.

When you launch the Nvidia control panel, are you doing it from the Configuration section of the Applications menu?

Have you tried launching the Nvidia control panel as root from a terminal?  I've had issues in the past with Nvidia settings not sticking unless I opened a terminal, did an su to root, and THEN launched the Nvidia control panel from the root terminal.  If you haven't tried that, it might be worth a shot.

My video card is an Nvidia 7200GS.  I have the "6100-GS" driver selected.

Inside the NVidia control panel, I set the monitor to auto, and then manually set the resolution.  I did do this as root, but after rebooting the settings were back to the original.  I rarely touch the NCP, as XFdrake always has worked flawlessly for me.

I don't understand what you mean by "I set the monitor to auto, and then manually set the resolution.". You can either set the resolution to "Auto" or to a specific resolution from the drop down list. According to the spec for your monitor, the resolution should be set to 1920x1200 with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Did you save the configuration before exiting nvidia-settings?

Did you log in as root and access the control panel from the application menu, or did you log in as your normal user and access the control panel as root from a terminal?  It is the latter method I was recommending that you try.

Also, I second Eddie's request for clarification of what you mean by "I set the monitor to auto, and then manually set the resolution."

Sorry about the confusion.  That was poorly worded.  Eddie - I tried both methods inside the nvidia control panel.  I did this as root, and made sure to save both times.  Obviously, these trial-error methods did not work.

CS - the method I used was to drop to a command line, and run the NCP as root.  I did not log in as root.

Tonight when I get home I will be trying a liveCD of Pheonix 2012.2.  I think it may have something to do with the Nvidia driver.

Edit: Just as I suspected - it works fine with the LiveCD.  Something with the Nvidia driver is screwing things up.  I may have to reinstall unless anybody has any better ideas.

Got it.  Uninstalled the Nvidia driver in synaptic, then re-installed it.  For those who might run into the problem and find this thread, you need to reboot after each step.

Resolution now defaults to 1920x1200.
