I'd put 1GB in slot 1, the other 1GB in slot 2, and the 2GB in slot 3, per the chart on the page JohnW linked.

I'd also check your BIOS settings, and see what it has under the memory section.  I seem to remember Dell BIOS occasionally having odd settings available.

After that, I'd run memtest from a boot disk like the Ultimate Boot CD and see what it returns, both in terms of total memory available and let it run a full pass to check for errors.

There is a 1GB being matched with a 2GB ........  which would explain the missing 1GB.

+1 also for a user who is common with hardware and build their own system and read the manuals.
For a user who is not common with hardware it' s easier to explain who counts the slots from left to right from the cpu.
