HP Laserjet P1006 does not print landscape
« on: July 10, 2012, 09:15:14 PM »
I am using PCLinuxOS, kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.A64.  I want to print a page from Firefox in Landscape mode.

I selected File > Print, select the Page Setup tab, and changed Orientation to Landscape.  Then I went back to the General tab and entered the page I want to print, and finally, I clicked Print.  The selected page printed, but in Portrait orientation.  If I return to the print tabs, the selection under Orientation is still Landscape.

I then opened PCC, opened Configure printer and scanning, selected the printer, and opened the Printer Options choice, where I changed N-up Orientation to Landscape, and clicked Apply.  I tried the print again, and again it printed in Portrait orientation.

What must I do to print in Landscape mode?

Thank you,

Jan

You can choose for different drivers
foomatic, hpijs or hpcups. ( cups config = http://127.0.0.1:631/admin )
If you are in a hurry, no experiment/test time, export your doc to pdf and print from within the Adobe reader (in Synaptic)

DeBaas,

I followed your link and I can see my printer.  However, I cannot figure out how to change my foomatic driver to one of the others.  Can you tell me what to do after I go to 127.0.0.1:631?  I tried Manage Printers, but could not figure out how to select another driver.

Click on your printername
Administration (root/pass)
Modify Printer
Continue
Continue
Choose Model with different driver and Continue.

DeBaas:

The procedure worked, but none of the drivers printed in landscape.  Some of the drivers I tried did not work at all, but I may have clicked on inappropriate ones.  I have returned to the Foomatic foo2xqx (recommended) driver.  I suppose only someone with this exact printer who has got this working would know the right driver.  I am unsure whether there is a Linux driver that wil print in landscape on this printer.  There may be a driver for an earlier model printer that would work, since I know that this printer is part of an evolutionary sequence, probably starting with the HP Laserjet P1005 or even with the Laserjet 910.

Thank you,

Jan

Then, for now, it is the pdf route then.
Waiting for someone who got this resolved.

This note is simply to provide completion.  DeBaas is correct, it is possible to print in landscape mode by using a pdf and Adobe Reader.  I suppose that this means that the software for the printer is faulty, and that Adobe Reader has its own software and bypasses whatever I normally use for the HP P1006 printer.

You didn't mention if you setup the printer to landscape mode in HP Device manager. Should be in Menu>More Applications>Printing.
Be very, very kind to your neighbors, but don't take the fence down!

maybe this is interesting:

I believe that this is the driver installation that I ran already.  I also followed Linuzoid's suggestion, and it led me to the same driver, I believe, which I again installed--twice.  There is no change; I cannot print landscape from anything but Adobe Reader.

Your not alone. This pesty bug (LO/driver/OS?) seems to never get ironed out or fails to get the attention needed. Got always bitten by it. Strange is that not all seems to have this problem.

In the manual I found the printer is also PCL 5e compatible.
Choose Driver >
Generic >
PCL 5e Printer >
Generic PCL 5e Printer Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e [en]
or one of the other available drivers to check ;)

Or take a look at:
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Generic/Generic-PCL_5e_Printer
for the latest and greatest.

About Adobe Reader,
this program is adjusting, resizing and rotating the pages and always is printing in Portrait.
LibreOffice is sending commands to the printer(driver) to rotate the pages.
If this is not implemented in the printer(driver) you're out of luck, no landscape.

I used the PCLinuxOS supplied generic Linux driver for my Brother HL2070N Laser, no landscape.
Found the HL2070N Linux specific drivers on the Brother website, installed outside Synaptic, problem gone.
Cannot find any P1006 Linux on the HP web site(s)
But also interesting:
