Setting up VPN
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:49:31 PM »
I am using a personal vpn service.  The web site for that service gives some basic instructions to get it working under Linux (though the screenshots look like Ubuntu).  I followed their instructions as close as possible, but I am not succeeding.  I used PCC to define the VPN.  I then went to my network interface (the green checked box in the icon area), opened it and configured my connection to tell it to use the VPN (or at least I think I am).  When I stop and then start the network, it continues to show that I am not using the VPN.  It is ignoring it.  Because I think I must be doing something wrong related to PCLOS as opposed to the VPN settings themselves (otherwise I would expect failure to connect to the internet) so I'm hoping to get an answer here.

For anyone using VPN (I'm using OpenVPN to connect), any tips on getting the network to point to using the VPn as opposed to the regular connection.  I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Running PCLOS 2012 KDE, fully updated.

Thanks.

sfeinst - can you post the instructions they give you?  They may say it works with Linux, but lots of vendors do this without it being entirely true.  PCLOS does have this capability on the control center, but it all depends on the service offered, and whatever proprietary software they may have.

Sorry to respond slowly.  I appreciate the help.  Away from home for a little bit, so intermittent internet access right now.  The main install instructions for general Linux (though the screenshots sure imply Ubuntu) is at:
https://www.witopia.net/support/setting-up-and-using-your-vpn/general-linux-openvpnssl-setup/

I just found:
http://wiki.witopia.net/wiki/Installing_personalVPN-SSL_on_Linux

which shows a little more info, so I'm going to play around a little with that when I get home in a few days, but still Ubuntu oriented.

Thanks

Stupid question - do they provide the .crt file?  Looks like that needs to be downloaded first.

Also, fiddling wtih PCLOS' vpn setup - most things seem to match with the exception of the LZO compression option (it might be there, and I am missing it a the moment).

I downloaded the files and when I setup VPN in PCLOS I pointed to the different files.  I did not see the LZO compression either.  Hopefully I can try some items in the other link tonight when I get home from work.

I tried following info in second link and I started openVPN from terminal.  It looks like it started, but i have no idea how to get Firefox to use that connection.  It continues to use the regular connection.  So either the VPN is not running correctly or I am missing some step which forces all internet traffic to use the VPN.  I have no idea what to do at this point.

Went there.  I do not see anything that shows selecting the VPN.  I only see proxy settings.  I'm not sure what to put in for proxy settings.  I saw in output from openVPN a line stating Peer Connection Initiated with and an IP followed.  Is that the proxy I use?  I tried it and I could not connect to internet.  I did try putting in the VPN site as the proxy as well and that did not stop internet access but it does not appear to change my location either.  So not sure it did anything.
