those logs do not show an attempt to connect, increase the log output to 50 lines by running this command:

tail -n 50 /var/log/syslog
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

after you try to connect and fail.

but first, unplug the wireless router from the power outlet, wait for about a minute, lug it back in and then wait for lights on it to settle down and then attempt to connect

Well if you have the eth0 wired connection disconnected,
the wlan0 wireless connection on (verified), the modem
key correctly entered into network configuration, all other
settings on auto, WEP chosen instead of WPA for security,
it should work.   Unless you changed it to WPA before, which
requires going into the modem itself and changing it's con-
figuration.

Can't be convinced it's a hardware problem yet.

how many network interfaces do you have on your computer?

those logs says interface eth0 is online but the firewall drops all incoming traffic.

why would eth0 generate online traffic while you are trying to connect wirelessly?

a bit more info on your setup will be useful.

what do these commands give you?

ifconfig

iwconfig

re-reading the thread from the beginning and this is the summary:

wlan0 interface is up and it can scan available wireless networks.

The network connectivity test is the one that is failing. If i understand PCC correctly, that means it can associate with the wireless network but its pings to the router are getting ignored.

can you turn off the firewall and try to connect, its dropping traffic on eth0 as seen in your logs could be the reason for connectivity test failure.

.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..
