<SOLVED>Cannot access DVD device
« on: July 06, 2012, 08:44:33 AM »
When I try to read/burn using K3b or browse in Dolphin, I get an error message; the settings shown below the dotted line is from the Control Center using KDE4.  I deleted then re-installed K3b, but that didn't help. The DVD burner works fine in Windows7.  Thanks, David

An error occurred while accessing 'Disc', the system responded: mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

Mount point: /media/cdrom
Device: sr0
Name: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T21N
Type: iso9660
Options: umask=0,user,iocharset=utf7,unhide,flush

Post output of following from a terminal:

ls -l /dev | grep sr0

Options: umask=0,user,iocharset=utf7,unhide,flush

iocharset=utf7? Are you sure that's right?

[cut for brevity by horusfalcon]

Mount point: /media/cdrom
Device: sr0
Name: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T21N
Type: iso9660
Options: umask=0,user,iocharset=utf7,unhide,flush

I have a predecessor to this drive, the HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T11N, and it operates no problems, out of the box. (It's kinda slow, though.)
Here are my settings, just for reference:

Mount point: /media/cdrom
Device: sr0
Name: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T11N
Type: auto
Options: umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec

I'll defer to djohnston here:  he is taking you along a logical troubleshooting path, gauging from the info he's requested.  I bet this gets sorted out in short order.

Later On,
D

The first thing I would do is go to PCLinuxOS Control Center--- (log on as root)

Local Disks --- CD/DVD (open) like so...

Select Type and check Auto.

Also, check your settings under Options.

You may need to reboot.

No expert here...just trying to help.  :)

Thanks to all.  I tried to duplicate the settings that horusfalcon used because his device was similar to mine, and it finally worked.  MGBguy: off the topic, but in the mid-fifties in Germany, I bought the first MGA that the dealer had received.  I would literally draw a crowd to admire the car when I pulled up at a stop sign;  wish I still had the car.

daveski,

As you were daft enough to be one of the first to buy, maintain, and enjoy an MGA (one of the first "modern sports cars", you have my utmost admiration and respect.  8)

My condolences for not keeping the A.   Glad, however,  that you got your problem resolved.

Again, welcome to the forum.
