64 Bit Repos Question
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:57:43 AM »
Sorry if this post in the wrong section but this is sort of a general question.

The 64 bit operating systems are obviously still in testing etc and a separate part of the forum. However will the 64 bit repos use all the programs and dependencies from the 32 bit repos which are fairly straight forward to convert over? Or will it have a core of programs like it has now and the others added as/when requested?

Would we have to request new 64 bit programs after the 64 bit OSs have been released? I am running pclinuxos64-kde-test05 on one partition and it is brilliant - I've never really got on with KDE before. There are just a couple of programs i use fairly regularly which aren't in the repos.

Apologies if the answers are blatantly obvious but there seems to be a lot going on in all directions and I seemed to have just landed in the middle of things.

I can't speak for the main developer's, but I am packaging programs that are requested, those that I want/need, and some that are in the 32-bit repos that will likely be requested at some time. The only ones that won't eventually make it to 64-bit are those that are no longer relevant or won't build with newer libraries. Neal and the rest of the developer's may decide to make a release before all packages have been transferred. That is up to them to decide and/or announce. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Galen.

The two programs I need at the moment are in the 32 bit repos so they will probably make the 64 bit repos when it is their turn. Meanwhile I am perfectly happy booting to Pheonix to do what I need to with them.

You can also head on to the Package Request section of the forum and tell us which app you needed for 64-bit. Please read the rules on that section ... which basically is just providing link to the source, etc.

Maybe this way can facilitate a speedy packaging of the apps you use.

Thanks Archie

I didn't know it was fair to request 64 bit packages before the release of first 64 bit OS. I will go over now to Package Request section to ask for these two apps but I appreciated that it may not be possible to have them in 64 bit and it may take some time.

Great choice, Leiche! Watching and listening as I write this.

We used to go to every Maiden concert in Düsseldorf, Essen, etc., and each time Bruce and the guys made our day, especially when Eddy appeared!  :D

And thanks for the great work you're doing for us all, it's very much appreciated!
