SOLVED:PCManFM crashes
« on: July 02, 2012, 04:11:59 PM »
This is on a week old install from the June 2012 mini iso. I'm reporting this again because the latest crash occured when emptying the trash from within the file manager. Simply selecting Empty Trash from the icon was enough to cause PCManFM to close on its own.

Either libgtk or libc will segfault and PCManFM will close spontaneously. This has been happening for quite some time on two other machines that have the 2012.01 LXDE version installed. PCManFM will crash when doing a file copy from one device to another. The filecopies are usually corrupted.

Typical segfaults are shown below. These are from the newer June 2012 installation.

Code: [Select]
[darrel@localhost ~]$ dmesg | grep error
pcmanfm[2476]: segfault at aaaaaae2 ip 41caddda sp bf920cd0 error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.4[41a40000+45d000]

As a long known "feature" PCManFM closes when you unmount the partition you are using but I haven't had corrupt files and sometimes has closed while copying, I assumed that just closed when the task ended.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

No partitions are mounted or unmounted. Nothing out of the ordinary is being done when the program crashes. In contradiction to previous responses to my earlier posts on this subject, the behavior I am seeing from PCManFM is not at all normal for any file manager. The crashes only started happening in the last few months.

You will find an update in test/testing. Can you see if it work for you better?

Attention:
Please wait on pcmanfm-0.x.xx-4, and libfm-0.x.xx-4, Version 0.x.xx-3 is buggy

Just updated pcmanfm from version 0.9.10-2 to 0.9.10-4. As dependencies, libfm was updated from version 0.1.17-1 to 0.1.17-4 and libfm-gtk from 0.1.17-1 to 0.1.17-4. As a new dependency,  libvala0 0.16.0-1 was installed.

Will switch from using Thunar to PCManFM for at least a few days. Thanks again, Leiche.

The pcmanfm update is in the updates section, while the two missing libraries are still in the testing section. In other words:

package                         section
---------                          --------
pcmanfm 0.9.10-5           updates
libfm 0.1.17-4                 testing
libfm-gtk 0.1.17-4            testing

Bare metal                           VBox

4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM

So far, so good. Only one crash a few days ago when opening a terminal from PCManFM and doing an iso download. The file manager window disappeared, but the download continued and the downloaded file is good. Much better behavior than before. Details are below.

Code: [Select]
pcmanfm[27491]: segfault at aaaaaae2 ip b75d5d0a sp bfba8570 error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.10.#prelink#.hwtnWu (deleted)[b7368000+45d000]
Prelink is installed.

Code: [Select]
rpm -qa | grep prelink
prelink-0.4.4-1pclos2011

One slight program regression. Please don't misunderstand me. I am not complaining, just reporting the behavior. Used to be able to add a custom folder to the left pane of the window, also called Places, by dragging and dropping the folder from the right pane to the bottom of the left one. That feature no longer works.

I am, however, marking this thread as SOLVED, because the file manager no longer crashes.

Tired of PCManFM, I finally installed 4pane, I think works just fine, I will keep PCManFM just in case it gets better
