Sound pops on old laptop
« on: July 01, 2012, 02:13:19 PM »
Dell Latitude D610, sound Intel Corporation|82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller).

Before every audio event I get a loud pop. I had this problem when I first installed PCLOS on it last year and running alsaconf as root after deleting asound.state did the trick.

Recently updated and the pop is back.  And alsaconf is not helping this time. What to try next?

you are using a recent kernel but not the most recent one, have you tried a newer kernel?  there is 3.2.18 in synaptic

i found this specs for your laptop

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd610/en/ug_en/specs.htm

it says that the sound card is a Sigmatel 9751, i never heard of this sound card before, not sure what module requires or what special alsa setting could require, can't find much information about it on internet  :-\

Will try updating the kernel and report back. I believe it uses  snd_intel8x0 driver per alsa and it is loaded

UPDATE - I have installed latest kernel and reran alsaconf as well - same pop.

Argh, why can't I get rid of it this time?

There is known issue with this sound chip and a usb conflict that cause a persistent hum but this is nothing like that, it is a pop, like a volume test - for every single sound even.
