Re: Epson scanner installation problems <SOLVED>
« on: June 30, 2012, 05:54:48 PM »
Hi Folks,

I'm trying to get my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner to install on my LXDE PCLOS. The PCLOS control centre hardware list says it's there and I then go to set up scanner and I get the message that the Epson scanner is not in the database do I want to set it up manually? I say yes and I'm told the scanner is on Port:libusb:001:008 and asked to select the Epson model which I can do because I've installed the iscan-proprietary-drivers/ via Synaptic. Well I then get a screen saying "Epson Perfection 4490 Photo has been configured. You may now scan documents XSANE and KOOKA. In a surge of happiness I click okay only to discover that the only scanner available on my system is my usb webcam!!! I have a look at XSANE and it too says it can only see the camera!!  I have been slowly going round in circles here in the wonderfully wet Welsh hills and I really don't want to go back to my rubbish old HP scanner which works first time but just not very well.  HELP!!!!!!

What am I doing wrong? I am doing as I'm told on every screen but PCLOS is stubbornly refusing to talk to the scanner which I know works perfectly!! I must be making a simple error but I can't spot it, can anybody shed some light (scanner joke) on my problem?

Thanks,

Nick.

Oh and I forgot to say that if I go back and try and install it again the list of scanners has reverted to the old iscan version which does not have the Epson 4490 on and I have to run Synaptic again to remove the old drivers and install the proprietor drivers to get the correct version displayed.

I've had enough now as it is 10 past 1 in the morning BST and I'm giving up and going to bed which takes a while because I've got a broken leg. Is there a quick fix to this? The scanner not the leg I mean!

Hi again,

I've solved the problem!!!!  ;D

Firstly remove the Epson Sane drivers from your PC then NOT using Synaptic or the PCLOS Control Centre follow the instructions below and install Image Scan for Linux with the data package, then the iscan package, then the plug-in from the site also shown below. And Voila! Image Scan should appear in your menu and work a treat! I used the rpm info/install utility available through Synaptic to load the rpms

Instructions: Go to http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/faq/id000651.php

Downloads: Go to http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX

Put in your Epson model number and the OS as Linux then on the results page select Core and Data package download. Accept the GNU Licence.

The files you need to download and install in order are:

iscan-data-1.15.0-2.noarch.rpm   and   iscan-2.28.1-3.ltdl7.i386.rpm

Then go back  to the Download Centre  and download the plugin package, accept the licence and select

iscan-plugin-gt-x750-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm

Install.

You should now have Image Scan for Linux in your graphics menu and it should work brilliantly!!

I shall now go and put my leg up.

Nick

I've just typed <SOLVED> in the subject box, is that it or do I have to do something more technical to declare SOLVED?  :D

Hi Nick,

I have had the same problem with an Epson V330 Photo scanner, and have found your post very helpful. Can you explain how you used the rpm info/install utility available through Synaptic to load the rpms? I have never downloaded anything other than from the repositories and am wary of doing anything that might screw up a beautiful operating system.

Thanks,

Chris

That was helpful - Nick in Wales  ;)

Had to replace my Canon Pixma. (More undocumented ERR messages than printed pages  >:( )

Now have a EPSON SX 230 for home use.

For printer:

epson-inkjet-printer-201108w-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm

From the terminal as root a

rpm -i epson-inkjet-printer-201108w-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm

will do the job.

For scanner:

iscan-data-1.17.0-2.noarch.rpm and iscan-2.29.1-5.usb0.1.ltdl7.i386.rpm

Also do a rpm -i with both packages. DATA package first!

Did not find (or need?) iscan-plugin-gt-x750-2.1.2-1.i386.rpm

I managed to get my Epson Perfection V33/V330 scanner working on PCLINUXOS-2012 but I recently upgraded to 2013 (64 bit) and it wan no longer recognised in the database none of the solutions mentioned in this topic seemed to work.  I then found an old set of instruction supplied by Avasys when I downloaded the drivers for the 2012 installation of my scanner and they state:

As a temporary work around, we recommend uninstalling the saned package before installing our packages, like so:
'rpm -e --nodeps saned'
Of course, this has the limitation of not being able to use saned (i.e. sharing your scanner over the network).
The alternative is to force install the iscan package, but that will cause a lot more headaches when upgrading later.

The entire installation process for the latest version of iscan would look like this:
- rpm -e sane-backends-iscan
- rpm -e --nodeps saned
- rpm -i iscan-data-1.3.0-2.noarch.rpm iscan-2.26.0-3.ltdl7.i386.rpm

You may get a warning or an error message if you have already removed the sane backends iscan in an attempt to get your scanner working using the previous methods above. Obviously you will need to change the names of the files on the last line of the instructions and I suggest installing them separately because you can then see if they are working:

rpm -i iscan-data-1.22.0-1.noarch.rpm
rpm -i iscan-2.29.1-5.usb0.1.ltdl7.x86_64.rpm
rpm -i esci-interpreter-perfection-v330-0.2.0-1.x86_64.rpm

I heard my scanner initialise as soon as I completed the install.  However, when I went into PCLINUX Control Centre to setup the scanner it still insisted that my scanner did not exist in its database.  So I launched the application Image Scan ! for Linux instead and it worked perfectly.  I the used XSane a while later and it worked as well.  So if all else fails, try the method above.
