I desperately need help with PcLiuxOs 2012 KDE installation.

The last couples of weeks is the beginning of my linux life. I've tried several distros of linux on VirtualBox, like another distro, fedora, opensuse and Arch Linux, and I'm pretty sure fedora is my favourite out of all these. But when I came across PclinuxOs later and got it on VirtualBox, I really love love love this system, I like the theme, the color, the background, the fonts, the sizes, it's just like my dream desktop in my first impression, and I've tried it on VirtualBox several days, it works perfectly,by the way.

So I decided to install to my hard drive.

Here is my situation.
I've already have Win7 which is formatted with NTFS running at first partition(Active of course) of my HD, and it works well. And I decided to install PclinuxOs into my second partition(sda5) which I formatted into EXT4 by using Gparted beforehand.

I've tried two methods.
1. Burn into CD using ISOrecorder which is mentioned by PclinuxOs website(md5sum checked, of course).
Boot with CD,and then comes these steps.

  • first,
  • then page of texts showing on the black screen(no screenshot)
  • again page of texts showing on the black screen really quickly this time, so I cannot get any useful hints on what's wrong with it.(no screenshot)
  • finally, sits at the black screen for a long long time, and I cannot get any further, no matter I run "liveCD" or "install PcLinuxOs" in the first place.

2. Using EasyBCD software to add an entry in the boot menu.
Everything is the same as the above, except this time, it didnot go black, but sits at this screen for a long long long long time.
.
And the blue progress bar goes down all the way to the end this time and sits there. by the way.

Is anyone know any solution by this situation?

Would be very appreciated for any help.

I really DO DO DO into this system, and want it on my hard disk.

Is there any other Boot Options?
Normally I like it to install to my USB stick.
I've run Unetbootin ,Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2 and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.13, but they seems only support the old versions of PCLS, coz I cannot find the 2012 option on the list.

i've had this problem before, too.  i just shut the thing off and then rebooted.  It worked just fine by proceeding with the installation.

It is pretty scary, though, because it really looks like you've borked something bad.

Have a great morning!  :)

You mentioned running it in Virtualbox - were you just using the 2012.02 ISO or was it from your burned 2012.02 LiveCD?

If it was from the ISO, I'd try running the actual LiveCD in Virtualbox as a simple method of checking the burn.

If the CD doesn't boot in Virtualbox, you may want to consider burning another CD using a slow burn speed.

You could also try booting in Video Safe Mode

What spec does your PC have especially graphic card(s) ?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

haha, i've successfully install PCLS by choosing the Video safe mode. I can't believe it's that simple.  Thanks scoundrel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but i'm encountering another problem, when I reboot my computer and enter into PCLS, after booting the system prompts(This time is really quick), my screen becomes like this.

it seems like my VGA driver not installing properly. How am I gonna install my VGA driver?
this maybe a stupid question, but i'm a newbie to the linux, and i'm so looking forward to use it, i can't wait to google for solutions.

The first thing I would do is open a file manager in superuser mode and copy the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.saved. That way, if I can't get back to a desktop I can at least copy it back.

Then open a terminal and type uname -r to see which kernel you are running. If it's a 2.6.38 kernel I would open Synaptic (the icon showing cardboard boxes, fourth to the right of the PC menu button in the panel), reload, and look for the 3.2.18 kernel, select it for installation and click the Apply button followed by the apply confirmation box. This will download and install a later kernel which might give better support for your graphics system. On reboot you will have to wait some minutes for the drivers to be rebuilt, but that only happens once.

Then open PCC (also known as PCLinuxOS Control Centre or Configure your Computer). It's the third icon on the panel to the right of the PC menu button; the one with the crossed tools in a circle. Select Hardware->Configure Video card and select a video driver for your Intel card. There are several to choose from, both proprietary and xorg. one of them should suit your system

Reboot again and see whether it's better. If you find yourself at a black screen press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to a text terminal. If that doesn't work try Alt+SysRq+R followed by Alt+SysRq+E and see whether you can now get into a text terminal. Once in a text terminal log in as root and then type cp -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf.saved /etc/X11/xorg.conf then type service dm restart && exit to get back to your original poor desktop, and pick a different driver. If you can't get intpo a text terminal at all, continue with the Alt+SysRq+REISUB sequence until the system reboots and select safe mode, which will get you into s single user text terminal where you can copy the file across. Then exit and reboot.

Glad it worked. Don't forget to keep your system fully upgraded by regularly opening Synaptic, clicking reload, then Mark All upgrades followed by apply. This should normally be done before installing any new applications, but I made an exception for the kernel because you needed to sort out the graphics before doing anything major, and kernels are not part of the auto upgrade process.
