How to modify KDE4 menu, main panel, and desktop?
« on: June 26, 2012, 05:15:39 PM »
How to modify KDE4 menu, main panel, and desktop?

1) How to add desired apps to menu "All Applications" (not in sub-heads)?
2) How to eliminate "Recently Used Applications" (it's duplicated under Actions)
3) How to manually hide and un-hide the main panel?
4) How to move and arrange panel icons in a desired sequence?
Partially solved, although moving panel icons is tricky as they jump around.
5) How can I change the "PC" icon on the main panel to a different icon?
6) How can I get rid of the nuisance cashew in the upper right corner?
Is it not true that anything that can be done from there can also be done
from the "PC" menu?  So why is that unwanted nuisance forced on us.

7) When I right click on the desktop, then click on Desktop Settings,
then click on "Get new wallpapers" . . . it says: "Network error (3)"

How can I fix this so I can find new wallpapers?

Read the PCLinuxOS Forum, Install the help documents (KDE4) with synaptic or read from kde.org documents, self experimenting!!

If you doing that you solve the 7 questions.

Edit: Self experimenting is one most fun part with KDE4 and other desktops and Linux!

Not fun for me, John.  I have very much appreciated the excellent help that so many knowledgeable folks in this forum have provided.  But hunting, pecking, and spinning my wheels trying to find solutions to get KDE4 to work as well as KDE3 always did is definitely not fun.

I have searched the forum, the help files, and the 'net; but trying to overcome the overkill of goofy wiggles, widgets, popups, clutter, and seemingly ever-changing and ever-deeper layers that make things so much more complex, cumbersome, and convoluted than it used to be is just highly frustrating.

Just hope that some others here will be kind enough to provide some constructive help to find answers to these questions.

(1) and (2) ... Right click on the Application Launcher icon.

For (1), select Edit Applications. There's tools to Add New Item or Submenu on their respective places on the Menu. Don't forget to Save your changes.

For (2), select Application Launcher Menu settings. Untick Recently Used Applications. Click OK.

EDIT:

For (5), select Application Launcher Menu settings. Click Options. Click the Icon and change your icon. Click OK.

For (3), right click the panel and Unlock Widgets if their locked, click on the cashew on the right side of the panel, choose More Settings, Auto Hide.

For (4), right click the panel and Unlock Widgets if their locked, click on the cashew on the right side of the panel, now move your cursor over the desired icon you wish to move, a cross pointer appears over the icon, now move it to the desired position on the panel.

Peace

Community teamwork! That should take care of all seven queries.

We're letting this one slide but for the next, one issue per post or the thread goes to the dumpster for breaking forum rules.  ;)

Don't we just have the heart?

After doing those things.  Don't forget to "lock widgets", again.

Hi Grandpa. Excellent tip. Lock Widgets will prevent accidental boo-boos. ;D

you know guys & gals.....  I don't know about joseppi, but I'm dyslexic.  Sooooo, asking someone like me to read a sh*tload of info, is like asking me to re-write the laws of the land.

There certainly are users who fear the unknown ... things could break. But I do agree that the best way to learn is hands-on. Sure, if there's something really broken, there are lots of experts in the community to lend users a hand. But it ain't really about solving the problem rather learning and knowing how to solve the problem. Solutions are passed and problems fixed then it happens again and users forgot what the fix was. It'l happen, no worries but what makes the better Linux users, you think?

Linux is actually quite simple. But it gets complicated because there are users who just don't want to follow simple instructions. Sorry for them but stuff don't get fixed that way.

I am not about to exploded with an attitude here ... I just want our users to be a little bit more than having to just wait for someone to give them the answer. I know, I know ... old dogs and new tricks ... OUCH!
