Thanks wobf58 and Colt45 for all the help, I believe I will purchase the Brother HL2280DW Laser printer and give it a try. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks so much.

Hello colt45: do you have this printer working wireless, I am just about to buy one from Staples, and decided to look at this thread again and saw where you had it set up with a usb cable. thanks.

Hi,

I have it connected to my main pclos machine by usb, but also print from it via wireless on 2 other pclos setups. I do any scanning from the usb connected machine, but print from others.
I've been very pleased with it.

colt45: I can't seem to get my system to locate the "hl2280dwlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.rpm" driver that I installed, did you do something special that I am missing? Synaptic says the driver is installed, but it doesn't show up in PCC>install printer, or in CUPS. any help is appreciated.

I downloaded the driver to my Downloads folder. It's still there. Installed as noted in previous post.
I had also already installed task-printing-misc located in Synaptic.
I downloaded and installed brscan4 0.3.0-3 from Brother and installed it the same way as hl2280dwlpr for scanner functions.
I set up the printer in CUPS as generic PCL laser printer.
Printing & scanning work fine.
A search for Brother in Synaptic is currently showing:
brscan4 0.3.0-3
task-printing-misc
hl2280dwlpr 2.1.0-1

Let me know if I can assist you further. Glad to try.

Edit 12/29:
I just realized that you stated the driver is shown in Synaptic, so I guess the installation steps I referenced are irrelevant.
Is the printer already connected/set up? Does CUPS not locate it in "Find New Printers"?
