Brother HL-2280DW
« on: June 25, 2012, 04:49:38 PM »
I just got a Brother HL-2280DW laser printer.  But looks like that there is no appropriate driver for that model.  I tried to download cups and lpr driver from the brother page but isn't working.  Does anybody got any experience with this.  Its a nice multifunction printer for just $150 so I would like to keep it.  Any help to get me started is deeply appreciated.

Hi,
I have that same printer and it works great. Install task-printing-misc from Synaptic. I had to download and install the brscan4-0 rpm from Brother to enable the scan function.
I am away from my regular desktop for the rest of the week, so I am unable to look at the exact configuration, but it wasn't much trouble to get it set up.

Hope this helps.

I have installed task-printing-misc and when I try to install it shows the HL-2280DW 4 times.  But in the next step when it looks for a driver there is no suitable showing.  I tried generic as well but when I print a test page it starts but it just throws tons of pages.  I always have to cancel that job.  I also tried the way they are showing on the Bother Solution Center page and followed that steps but isn't working either.  It might be because right now I am using the test version of PCLinuxOS 64bit.  The coming weekend I will try it with the 02.2012 32bit version since I am traveling the next few days.

Hi wobf58 - you may want to ask the Mods to move this thread over to the Testing section so the feedback can be picked up seeing as it's related to the 64bit Test release.

As I recall, I had 5 instances of this printer. I tried different ones until it worked correctly. That's the type of option that I'm unable to look at now, as I also am away from home.

Back at my desktop having a look; PCLinux Control Center printer setup shows Device URI as  dnssd://Brother%20HL-2280DW._printer._tcp.local/

This is what I have installed via Synaptic, per a search for Brother;
brscan4
cups-drivers-ptouch
hl2280dwlpr
task-printing-misc

I don't know if this helps you at all, but it's the best indication I can give of how I installed mine.

I am just about to purchase a Brother HL 2280 DW Laser printer, copier, scanner and was wondering if wobf58 got his issue resolved. I'll be watching this thread before placing my order at Amazon. Thanks for any input.

I have installed all of the above mentioned but wasn't able to find brscan4.  After trying to add a printer and choosing any of the four HL-2280 coming up, the next step is choosing a driver.  But then, even the hl2280dwlpr is installed, there is no driver called HL-2280 or similar showing up.  HL-2170 is the closest what shows up.  Since hl2280dwlpr is installed, I am expecting some driver showing up then.  The next days I have time to look into it and will try a lot.  I keep you posted.

I was able to get the printer to work with the "Generic PCL Laser Printer" driver.  Even though the hl2280dwlpr is installed, its not showing up in the driver list of Brother.  So as of now at least the printing function is working.

Colt45, how you setup the scanner?  brscan4 is installed but when I use the scanner install, its not showing up.

Menotu, I can read in the testing section but I cant reply to any threads.

Now I got the scanner to work.  Follow the instructions from "http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1b.html".  Use the rpm commands.  I never got the results they are showing in their examples but as long as you don't get an error message, you are fine.  Install the driver: "rpm  -ihv  --nodeps  brscan64.rpm" --- Add Network Scanner entry: "brsaneconfig4  -a  name=brother  model=hl2280  ip=192.168.1.119" --- Confirm Network Scanner entry: "brsaneconfig4 -q | grep SCANNER".  These were the commands I used.  The test scan was OK.  Just would like to find out if its possible to scan different ways like into a file or email or so.  Just like you can with the software it comes with.

Oh, not much on installing stuff from outside the repos, I guess if it doesn't work with the PCLinux drivers that are in the repo, I better look at another Laser printer. Maybe HP. Thanks.

The printer now is working fine for me.  Printing and scanning is working.  I am using KDE 4.8.3 with Kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs

I am using a fully updated install 32 bit, KDE 4.6.5, Kernel 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs.
I used task-printing-misc for the printer installation and when given multiple printer entries to choose from, I have it noted that I chose the 2nd option. I installed this printer on 3 desktops and a laptop this way and it works fine.
For scanning, I downloaded the driver from Brother brscan4 32bit, on this page: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html
Followed their instructions here for rpm installation to my usb connected desktop:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1a.html
Scanning also works fine.
I haven't found a need to install scanning on my networked computers, as the usb connected machine is my primary.

I hope this helps.
