Download YouTube videos the light way
« on: June 24, 2012, 02:43:11 PM »
I have an oldish PC …. ok – it's an old brick, I know I know.  That means that downloading videos from the popular hosting sites like YouTube always meant use of quite some resources.  So I was browsing around for a program that could do this cheaply in a terminal.  I found youtube-dl.

I tried it and it worked very well.  Figured out how to make sure the resolution I like is downloaded, the file name is the way I want it etc ….

Longtomjr felt it would be a lot cooler to make this easier to use with a bash script and zenity.

So this is what you need to do.

Download youtube-dl from here. Right click on the date and choose "save link as"
Download Youdl.sh from here

Create a folder /home/you/bin . (if it doesn't already exists)
Copy youtube-dl and Youdl.sh into /home/you/bin

At that point I renamed youtube-dl to youtube-dl.py

Run Youdl.sh in a terminal.  It will run without a terminal but than you can't see the progress.

We decided to make a .desktop file in order to have it in the menu (PCLinuxOS LXDE).

If you like that - here is the .desktop file.

Save it in /home/you/.local/share/applications/ (Thanks Leiche)

That's were we called it a day.  It does what we wanted and some.  Maybe you find some use for it too.

Just noticed that youtube-dl (Small command-line program to download videos from YouTube) is in the repo for 64bit not sure about 32bit

Another decent  command line app is movgrab (in the repo) where you just run

movgrab and paste the youtube url address and that's it

Thanks menotu.  The idea was to take one of those and make it a tat more "User Friendly" so the choice of resolution and the like doesn't mean you need to study the man page first.

Thank you both, I will try it tomorrow, time to go to bed now  :)
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

does it work just for youtube or for other sites as well?  it doesn't say much about other sites on that link

The documentation claims as follows:

Quote
Supported sites

    YouTube.com.
YouTube.com playlists (playlist URLs in "view_play_list" form).
YouTube.com searches, using the special keyword "ytsearch" as a form of URL, as in "ytsearch:cute kittens". Do not forget the quotes if you want to include spaces in your search. Other variants are "ytsearchN" to download more than the first result, with N being a number, and "ytsearchall".
YouTube.com user videos, using user page URLs or the specifc "ytuser" keyword.
    metacafe.com.
    Google Video.
    Google Video searches ("gvsearch" keyword).
    Photobucket videos.
    Yahoo! video.
    Yahoo! video searches ("ybsearch" keyword).
    Dailymotion.
    DepositFiles.
    blip.tv.
    vimeo.
    myvideo.de.
The Daily Show / Colbert Nation.
    The Escapist.
A generic downloader that works in some sites.

Haven't tested them all yet.

How does this compare to the many downloaders offered in FF  as a add-on?

I use video downloadhelper 4.9.9 and have so far not wished for more. And there are many more.
But "better" is simply better ha!  :)

On my old rig - see signature - it makes a feelable difference which can also be observed on the CPU usage monitor.  Yes - Downloadhelper is great but the subsequent window it opens while the download is happening is heavy on juice with me hence I was looking for an alternative.

Most of the fun was putting it together, of course ...  ;D
