Printing a CD booklet from pdf. (Solved - more or less)
« on: June 23, 2012, 02:13:58 PM »
It's probably a long-shot to ask here, but someone may have done it.  I've recently downloaded a CD from Chandos, and they supply the booklet in pdf format.  I'd like to print it so that it will fit into a standard "crystal" case.  I have a fair amount of experience with printing booklets both from OpenOffice and Adobe pdf reader, but cannot manage it this time.

The Adobe reader almost works, using the brochure setting I can get the pages in the right order, two per side and backed up - but not without a white margin down the middle.  I thought I could fool it by changing the paper size to 4.72in x 9.52in, but there's no way of setting a custom paper size in the current version supplied in the repositories.

Evince also almost works, in that it will print two pages side by side with no white space between, but halves the size - it's picking up the 4.72 x 4.75 page size from the pdf file I suppose, and making it fit that.  (There's no brochure setting so I'd have to organise the page order myself, but that I can do.)

Ocular and Foxit don't seem to have a two pages per sheet option.

So at present I'm stuck.

How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

Did you try the windows version of Fox It? it installs using Wine and has a lot more features
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Thanks Crow.  Easily installed and allows multiple pages, but I cannot see how to set the manual page size setting.  So I settled for a slightly smaller booklet by printing 4 pages on each side of US letter size sheets, with zero margins and backed up (two passes, my printer doesn't do double sided.)

Much to my surprise I got the page order right first time.  If anyone else is trying to print a 16 page booklet this way the order is:- 16,14,1,3,12,10,5,7 followed by 2,4,15,13,6,8,11,9 on the backs of the two sheets.

(Actually I think I could have done this using the Adobe reader too.)
