How do I run testdisk? <SOLVED>
« on: June 23, 2012, 01:41:34 PM »
Hello everybody,

I'm trying to recover files in a mac external HD.
The original case broke down, I used the case from another one and the disk seems fine but some files seem to be broken.

I read about testdisk but I can't find it in the menus.

Anybody can tell me how do I run Testdisk?

....OKeeey

Except Synaptic tells me both are installed, but I can't find either of them in the menus.

Do they only run from a command line?

If so, how do I do so?

I already tried "testdisk" and "run testdisk" and it did not work.

Both are command line utilities.
They are launched by the commands

testdisk

and

photorec

If you get 'command not found' then it is likely you need to su to root to use them.

Thx for the replies!

I was trying the "run command" from the menu, that way neither photorec or testdisk worked.

Testdisk runs from terminal.
Photorec asks for root to run. SU does not cut it!

I'll login as root to check again on photorec and let you know how it works.

Photorec asks for root to run. SU does not cut it!

It is su (not SU)

Code: [Select]
terry@dell ~]$ su
Password:
[root@dell terry]# photorec
PhotoRec 6.13-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, November 2011
...

I'll login as root to check again on photorec and let you know how it works.

It is not recommended to log in to the desktop as root as it makes it too easy to break your system  ;)

Looks like you are trying to check the file system. In such case I always boot up PMagic and run check in gparted.
Might work for you as well. But in case of a external drive like you have on hand here, you could run gparted from your machine.
DO PAY ATTENTION to pick the right HDD in both cases!
