SOLVED : hang when copying files !!

Hi guys
I'm having a problem When I do a copy of large files like ( 60 GB )  it takes a long time
and The system becomes very very slow

Cpu : intel 13
ram : 4 GB
nvidia 9500gt

size of ( / ) : 55 GB
swap : 4000 MB
any idea ?

Copying from where to where (local drive, USB, network)?

What process or commands are you using to copy (drag-n-drop in Dolphin, bash cp, rsync, etc.)?

What type of data (if that's Ok to ask ... uncompressed text-like, VDIs, compressed data)?

If you are using KDE a Notification icon should appear in the panel (and begin "circling") clicking on that brings up a window with details of transfer speed - how long it will take (not always very accurate) and so on.

So, I take it the external drive is USB?  IS the drive USB2 (or 3, etc.).  What is your chipset (is the port you're using USB2)?
Do you have the complete specs for your PC, as well as the external drive?
USB2 "bursts" to 480 mbps, but generally runs quite a bit slower, otherwise...it can impacted by other system activities...I could see large file copies "stuttering" under certain load conditions.

When it "hangs", can you check dmesg for any indicators of other possible causes. please?

transfer speed 1.5 Mbit/s , I previously used arch linux kde and the transfer speed is approximately 23 Mbit/s

yes the external drive is USB ( usb2 )
i will test again and when it hang i will use dmesg

BTW same thing "hang" when using virtualbox
what is the recomended space for

i have : i3 speed 3.1 ghz

what kernel are you using?

Somebody else in another reported a system free when trying to copy a 10GB file to an external drive.The two could be related some how.

kernel : 2.6.38.8bfs , and i Used also 2.6.38.8bfs.pae "same problem"

There seem to be a lot of discussions on google world around your issue but nobody seem to know the solution.

kernel 3.2.x is in the repository.Try to use one of these kernels are check if the problem is still there.

The problem seem to be around memory catching, and it shows up when writing to destination file is much slower than reading from source file.

More memory will not solve the problem as the problem will come back if the transferred file is large enough.

I'm using now kernel : 3.2.18-pclos2.pae

There is an improvement   just simple hang , But compared to what came before and now .. now is better
also transfer rate now is : 35 MiB/s
