Problems with monitor setup on a Dell D820
« on: May 05, 2013, 02:35:32 PM »
Hey, I am not a complete newbie, but this has got me stumped.

I love the way the new PCLINUXOS 64 runs on my Dell Latitude D820.  It has the T7600 Dual Core Centrino processor running at 2.33 GHz.  There is 2Gb of ram and a 320GB hard drive.  The computer has a Nvidia G72M GeForceGo 7400 video card.

Everything I have tried does not change the monitor from displaying in 1920 x 1200 LVDS-0 mode.
I am not a young whipper snapper and I can hardly read any of the text even with glasses.  I have tried editing the Xorg.conf file, but it still boots up and runs in 1920 x 1200.

Can someone tell me please, how to change this in the settings.  I love the computer and the new 64 version, but I can't read anything.  All of the config settings commands send me back to the monitor default.

Thanks.

You can change the fonts size settings in KDE4 Control Center:  look and appearance -> fonts, so set it in a bigger size.
A lot of applications  gives you option to change the size the fonts.

Maybe a desktop log out/in is needed

Hi John,

Thanks, I tried that but things like login boxes and other important items do not always increase with the size.

It is strange because my Desktop is running the same OS 64 and uses an Nvidia card similar to the one in the desktop, and I do not have this problem with it.  I was able to change from a LVDS display to a VGA without a problem, but the notebook remains on LVDS-0 with the default of "automatic-1920 x 1200 (60 Hz)".

I have never had this much of a problem configuring anything in any of the Linux distros, especially with PCLOS.  Theirs is always the most well thought out and easy to configure of any distro around.

Thanks though.

oldbear1,
First time we have talked I think. Welcome.
I think that the most effective way to fix that resolution problem is via PCC.
Click on PCC button > enter the Admin password when requested and then click on Hardware.

Go to Configure Video Card. In the second line it says Monitor. I chose, for my laptop
Flat Panel 1366 X 768
In the third line, where it states Resolution, select Other (if the resolution you need is not shown). Down there, you will see heaps of resolutions listed. That's where I chose 1366 X 768.
After selecting your required level, you will need to exit from PCC and then Log out. There is no need to reboot, but at least a Log Out is required to make the changes stick.
Next Log in should see your resolution problems solved.

Good luck,

Jim

Bit off-topic:

I using a 23" full HD monitor and changed the font size to less.  :-\

My glasses are more then -8 diops atm.

Guess  it's personal issue (I think).

Hi Jim,
Yes, Since I am new to this forum, it is the first time we have talked and thank you for the welcome.
I followed your instructions, but it did not make any changes to the display at all.   I tried three different configurations with just logging out and with a full reboot.  Every time I went back to the "Configure your Desktop" them went to display it comes up with LVDS-0 connected
Size 1920 x 1200 (auto)
Refresh (60Hz)

The only option it gives me other than 1920 x 1200 is Disabled.  When I click on that it gives me a blank screen until I turn the computer off with a power switch.

Editing the Xorg.conf file does not seem to do anything either, because they system never recognizes Xorg.

Any other ideas?

Hey John,
I would have a real hard time cramming your monitor into my 15" notebook, for the trip I am taking next week.  The last time I saw the eye doctor was probably back in 1970 so I don't know 1 diops from another. LOL    Thanks for the comments though.

What is the native resolution of the monitor on that laptop?

It appears to be 1680x1080 from a review I read.

Is the 'Monitor' being correctly recognised in PCC - Hardware?

Do you have
Code: [Select]
nvidia-settings
installed?

If so, try running that, and making the change.  If you run it as your regular user, the change will only persist for the current session, but you should be able to run it as root
Code: [Select]
su -c nvidia-settings
and then you can save the changes to the X configuration file, so it should be permanent (although, I've never done that, because I'm happy with the autconfig, except when docked)

You have to access Configure Your Computer to perform the changes, not in Configure Your Desktop. In the panel the crossed tools in a circle. :)

Yeap, it's a bit confusing...
