(SOLVED via hardware fix) Acer Laptop with the Update
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:48:14 PM »
I ran the latest update this evening on my older Acer laptop.  I got things ready for when KDE4 would be reconfigured. Update went smoothly.  I rebooted to se how things look and decide if I wanted to revert back to my old desktop.

Well, the system won't boot. it gets hung at "Setting hostname localhost.localdomain:"

No big deal as this system is just a spare backup for just in case scenarios.  I can always do a reinstall.  But if it's a quick fix, then I'll give it a go.

I have several Kernels installed.  sop, I tired 2.6.38.8-pclos1.bfs and it booted right up.:)

I also did the kde4 switch and my original desktop just came up.:)

Only thing is, it's not connecting wirelessly.  and the net applet in the system tray does not give me access to its interface..

I had a problem with wifi not working too.

It turned out the update had turned off the wifi chipset.

On my Lenovo V570 laptop to toggle the wifi on/off do <Fn-F5>.

Look in laptop documentation to see how to do it for your system.

Thanks.:)  I'l give that a try later this evening.:) This laptop has a button on the outside panel that toggles Wi-Fi on and off.  I tried it last night, but rushed through it because I didn't see it immediately respond. I'll give it a second look and find my documentation.

I downloaded the latest PCLOS image with KDE.  If need be, I'l do a reinstall.:)  It'll be fun and I'l learn something more.   Just trying to remember the command to take ownership of a user account.  Chown is what it is.

I found a small bit of info on it at:  http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fileowner.html

But, OP gave a much better explanation in a thread where he helped with this last time.:)  Gotta dig that up again.:)

EDIT -- found it:  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,76462.msg639205.html#msg639205

I think I may do an upgrade install this week.  Maybe even tonight.  It depends on how much time I have and how quickly I can get things up and running.

To review the steps:

1.) In the current install, in PCC, change the user from "mark" to "markold"
2.) Run the Live CD (2010.7), and install.  Make sure to mount "/" and "/home." Format "/" only!
3.) On reboot, create the user mark at UID/GID 500:500.  This will give me access and ownership to markold.
4.) In Terminal, run "chown -R mark:mark: /home/markz"  This gives me ownnership of markz files.
5.) Move files from markold and markz to mark.
6.) Delete user account markold via PCC.

I di a reinstallthis eveing and it went smoothly.:)  Wow!  Kudos to the team!  The interface makes it incredibly easy!

After i did the update, I went and updated. Like before, at the very end of the update, my connection went down.  Now, I can't even bring up the network center.  When I right click on the network icon in the system tray, I ask to connect and it can't.

I tird toggling my panel button but that's not working.

Okay, my wireless is not working.  I was able to plug in wired and get online.  when i go to configure wireless it tells me no drivers are present. i'm assuming I need to download something from synaptic?

BTW, network interface still not coming up.  The network Center icon is right on the desktop and it does not bring up anything.  Network Center does not launch.

I rebooted and now network center is coming up but still can't find wireless.

when I updated, I did so via wireless. I'm thinking that I should have been hardwired. that way I would not have been disconnected.  maybe It botched a package or two?

If need be,I can one more install and this time do the update wired.  Unless there's a quick fix or terminal command.

I had that problem about 5 years ago and solved it by copying and pasting a file from the live cd while Joble tried to help me. Now, if I only could remember what file it was?  ???

Is Network Center showing no wireless networks when you right-click on it, or is it not showing wireless at all?  Have you used the Configure Network link and wizard?

My new Acer netbook initially had wireless working normally, but after fully updating it the network manager has been a little funky.  What I am getting is that no wireless show up from right-clicking the net-applet in the system tray, but if I go to Manage Wireless Networks it scans for them fine.  Wifi Radar also works fine.

Network Center comes up sometimes and then it doesn't. Depends on if I'm connected hard wire and logging off and back on. Wireless is completely not there.  NC tells me the drivers or some such thing are not present.  I just did a second install of PCLinuxOS and have not run the update. I can ell ya right now that everything works flawlessly.  Something in the update throws it a curve.  Again, could it be tht i should run the update when I'm wired and not wireless?

Before updating the system, see what shows as your wireless card in Network Manager.  Is it a Broadcom card?

Yes, it is.  It's a broadcom card.

I did the second re-install last night then turned in.  Again, I gotta tel ya, this was, by far, the easiest install of a Linux distro!!!  The interface is nearly automatic.  Yes, you do need to understand partitions and the "/" for root directory and "/home."  But, really, beyond that, it finds everything (including the Windows partition).

BTW, I noticed that Synaptic has a slightly different look than what I have on my desktop and notebook (and both of these ae fuly updated..unless I missed something) .

First things first, gotta get that Acer updated and wireless working.:)

In addition, reading the thread, found this:

Quote
1. Did a Synaptic update for everything EXCEPT dkms-broadcom-wl.5_100_82_112
2. After all downloads were completed and changes were applied, searched for kernel 3.2.18 bfs and marked for installation
3. Did not bother to search/click for installation of dkms-broadcom-wl.5_100_82_112 because kernel 3.2.18 requires it to be installed anyway
4. Clicked Apply > Apply and after all downloads were completed and changes were applied, searched for packages starting with b43 (there are only 3)
5. Marked all 3 packages starting with b43 for removal
6. Clicked Apply > Apply and after changes were applied, closed Synaptic and restarted the netbook
7. Upon reboot and loading of desktop.... wlan was connected automatically and internet connection was OK!

Many thanks, pinoc for the quick posting of solution. Hope this could help others as well. Marking this thread solved.

Cheers!

This is what I try this evening.:)  Actually looking forward to this.:)  (Wish I had the laptop with me right now.)

I tried the above fix. folowed the instructions to a "T."   It did not work.

Then, I remembered tht I had a different Wireless card for this laptop.  I bought the laptop in my pre-PCLinuxOS days.  The developer was trying to get the Broadcom card to work with his distro. When it didn't work, he sent me a new card.  For some reason, that card didn't work either.
well, I kept the card.  I pulled it out and swapped it for the Broadcom card.

It's an Atheros card, it works,  and I'm wireless as I type this!!:)

So, I guess things are okay.  not sure if Need to re-install certain files or not.  Maybe run a different kernel?

Next step is restoring my KDE desktop from the previous install.:)
