umtsmon works well BUT
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:34:08 AM »
I am using UMTSmon to connect a hauwei mobile broadband USB stick to Internet
It connects  and I get good speed and brows all over the place no problem BUT

If I log in as Root and start umtsmon from the gui menu it starts identifies the net work as 65501 which is correct and shows signal strength plus network number with the word UMTS in the window.
I click the connect button and it opens a small window with bar graph saying setting up ppp0 connection then puts he network number +signal strenght and the word UMTS back in the window.
A panel appears at bottom of screen advising that network is up etc etc

If I click on umtsmon as a normal user it asks for the Root password which is a nuisance that I can tolerate. Umtsmon starts and displays correct network 65501 plus signal strength plus word UMTS
WHEN I CLICK ON CONNECT BUTTON all that info is taken off the window and it says searching.
other info like Signal strength shows N/A However the system is actually connected and I have full access to the internet. I minimise UMTSmon window to the bottom bar where it happily stays with the words SEARCHING but otherwise no ill effect. it never stops searching no mater how long I leave it.
Can any one guess why logged in as root user and connecting as normal user, after giving root user password is different and how to I fix it ??

Don't log in as root (ever) .......  open a terminal, su to root, and then launch the app from the terminal .....  there may be something in the terminal output to indicate what is happening .....

You should have the option "ignore" here.  Did you try that running as user?

I would like to report that I installed Sakis script and got good connection to the internet .In addition something that happened during the installation of that script fixed the problem in umtsmon. Umtsmon now runs perfectly and selecting ignore when it asks for Root password also works no problem. The Script had something to say about USB switching and I am guesing that may have been what fixed umtsmon. I have ended up with 2 programs to do the job and they are equaly good
Later when I have time I am going to ask for help to make one of them run in background and live in the tray.
Thanks to all for the help.

Would it not be beneficial to have this utility in the repo?  It is GPL.
