CD/DVD Burner fails after update
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:57:05 AM »
Hi All

This is a strange problem. Been with PCLOS for a long time and never had this problem. 2 Weeks ago my LG burner would not burn images in K3B without and error message at the end of the burn. I installed Brasero to try it and the burner doesn't even show up as a drive when I put a blank CD or DVD into it. I did some distro hopping and couldn't find another distro that had this problem on my hardware and coudn't find a distro I liked the look and feel of as much so I came back to PCLOS. After my first install I burned an image to test it and it went perfectly. Did all the upgrades yesterday, 28 May, and today tried to burn and I'm back to where I was 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Other than a basic install, I have added PlayOnLinux, Decibel audio player, gnome-games and Libre Office from the desktop icon.

Thanks

different ditros use different versions of apps and kernel, we use certain versions that offer us more stability on the apps we use but this sometimes doesn't support all the hardware we have

what kernel do you use?  open konsole and write uname -r and post the results

since you mention k3b i assume you are using kde4, what other burning apps have you used?

the drive, is internal or external? if internal, is it sata?

I tried Braser too, it doesn't even see the drive with a disk in it. Tried +R and -R disks.

uname -r 2.6.38.8-pclosl.bfs

the kernel i use is 2.6.38.8-pclos3 so you have a older kernel than mine

do you know how to update?

about the drive itself, did you assembled the machine?  i found in lg that your drive uses sata cable and sometimes some raid ports in the mainboard works weird sometimes, also some sata3 gives problems

Let me second that:  My Dell Precision 690 has both SAS (for RAID) and SATA ports, and they both look the same and take SATA cables, but require interposing connectors on the drive end for the SAS drives.   Seems like being plugged into an SAS port would cause it not to work at all, though... hmm.

Dell Latitude D620, PCLinuxOS 2012.08 KDE4/LXDE, 3.2.18.pclos.bfs, specs here.
