« on: June 18, 2012, 10:51:54 PM »

Have you put the smartphone in USB transfer mode?  On my Android phone it pops up a screen asking if I want to enable USB transfer, and on my older non-smartphone I had to turn the option on using a menu.

Once you put your phone in USB transfer mode it should show up as a removable drive on your computer.

No, I didn't. I only purchased this phone 2 days ago and still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that. I merely assumed that the phone would be automatically recognized like any other USB device. My phone is a Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0.4 on it so it shouldn't be a lot different than any other Android phone.

ICS uses a mtp Windows protocol which is different from previous Android versions. I'm still trying to figure it out.

I tried following this for Linux Mint but was unsuccessful. It seems that everything I search for on this topic points me to another distro and that doesn't work. At least not for me. Here is the result from lsusb: [root@localhost snapshot]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 04e8:6860 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd GT-I9100 Phone [Galaxy S II]
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04a9:1905 Canon, Inc. CanoScan LiDE 200
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 03f0:c602 Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart D7100 series

The phone is there but I can't access it as it doesn't show up as a connected device on dolphin or the device notifier.

Did you put the phone into USB transfer mode?  I get a similar result from lsusb with my phone plugged in, but until I put the phone itself into USB storage mode then it won't show up in Dolphin or as a device.

You need to put the phone into USB storage mode on the phone itself.  You should have a screen on your phone like this:

My phone doesn't display this screen. Are you running ICS? I've unplugged and plugged the usb cable but no message ever appears. Therein lies the problem. This is a known issue with the MTP protocol and you have to do a workaround to get it to work. I've installed all of the required packages from Synaptic but it still is inaccessible. Apparently this is a Windows protocol which appeared in Honeycomb then became the default in ICS. I've Googled it and read several topics on the issue but virtually all relate to Ubuntu and don't seem to work with PCLOS.

mtpfs is installed and made no difference. PCLOS doesn't even see the device from a file manager. It's as if it isn't even connected. I'll check out the video. Why does this have to be so difficult?

If I change the phone to camera it shows up in the device notifier but I still can't access it. It is recognized as a camera but DigiKam tries to access it but although DigiKam opens it doesn't actually find anything. Gwenview is another option on the device notifer but it give me an error URL cannot be listed
camera:/
There is no option to change to mass storage other than under USB computer connection where I have 2 options: 1) Media device (MTP) 2) Camera (PTP) neither of which are successful.

I was reading ICS as "Internet Connection Sharing" - didn't realize you were referring to Ice Cream Sandwich.  My phone is indeed an earlier version of Android, and I was unaware of the changes they've made to how Android handles USB connections.

I did some searching, and found a couple of links that might help.  It looks like some people have taken to using wireless as an alternative, but there are some leads to mounting the file system, too.  Have you seen these?

Sorry for my misunderstanding previously - hopefully these articles might have something useful in them.

I've read and tried virtually option with no success. Like I mentioned before it seems that all of the helps in these links point  to Ubuntu and do not work with PCLOS. I tried them before posting this thread. I'm now using a Samsung application under VBox/Win7 to see if that will help. MTP is a disaster for file transfer no matter what OS you use. Windows is hit or miss and Mac is almost as bad as Linux. If this fails I'm not pursuing it any further as it was going to be use to transfer music to my phone one time. So far the time spent isn't worth the gain. I'm closing this thread since I was able to configure it in VBox using Kies software from Samsung. I say it again, it's not supposed to be this hard. Thank you all for your help.

Bob
