(kwin - solved) Problems after last update-/home ran out of memory during update

I hope these problems are not too difficult to solve. I put both in one thread not knowing whether or not they are related. I might as well start another separate thread.

After last update I realized that my /home directory ran short of memory, which triggered some error messages. I then (maybe a mistake) after clearing some disk space, reinstalled the updates, however got following message:

The second problem is related to kwin:
It says the effects are not available due to following reasons, however there are no reasons indicated. So I can not activate any effects. All kwin effects are deactivated.

I have really no clue where to get started, and would appreciate any inputs. I really would like to avoid a complete reinstall.

I am unable to guess from the information your provided regarding your first issue. However, I may be able to suggest something on your second.

On SystemSetting's Desktop Effects, click the Advanced tab. If your compositing type is OpenGL, change it to XRender. Click Apply.

Close and Open SystemSettings again and on the same Advanced tab, reselect, OpenGL and click Apply again.

Close and Open SystemSettings again and you should be good to go. Why it does that, I still don't know the exact cause. But it did happen on one of my install and I got it fixed by playing with the Compositing type.

Thanks for the fast response. Problem however is that I can't even click the advanced button.

PCC > Hardware > Configure Video Card. Make sure you have the correct driver for your video card. Then try again.

Checked. Still no luck.
I have an Intel HD card. In PCC I use Intel 810 and later

Let's try with a default kwin.

$ mv ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc_bak

Then logout/in again. First thing you should do when you login is check the Desktop Effects.

That worked! Everything is back to normal. Can I keep these configurations?

You may do whatever you wish with it. You have just created a new Kwin session. After tweaking and personalizing it, you may want to delete the old configuration.

$ rm -f ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc_bak
