First, I hope I posted this in the right place. Second, it's summer now so it isn't as mission-critical as it is during the school year; I'm using my XP install, which won't kill me but is demoralizing :)  Third, and most important: I WANT TO KEEP USING PCLINUXOS! I love everything about it, have bragged and promoted it to everyone I know as the best Linux distro available.  But... if I can't get a handle on how to prevent this from happening again I'm gonna have to jump ship. Which I absolutely DO NOT want to do!!!

Here is the problem: Recent updates have broke my install and made it impossible to boot into my system.  This is the second time the exact thing has happened.  The first time is described here:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,104501.0.html

System is a HP Pavilion laptop, DV6324US

Also, I have been getting lots of Repository errors lately, and the night of this most recent set of updates.  Don't know if that had anything to do with this.

What I do not understand, is that the original problem occurred in April. I was advised to do a reinstall.  Since then, I have performed complete updates constantly and never had any problems.  Why would it occur again now? I would have assumed the dkms-broadcom-wl would have updated by now.  Here is my synaptic log:

I want to also add that I am not approaching this with a sense of entitlement.  I love this OS and GREATLY appreciate the incredible amount of work that goes into it.  I also greatly appreciate the generous support from the community.

But, of course, my issue is that losing my system during the school year can ruin me.  Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!

THANK YOU PCLINUXOS COMMUNITY AND TEXSTAR!

I suppose I could just pin the broadcom driver after reinstalling, but I worry that I will run into a similar problem again as Ive had NVIDIA card problems before that stopped me from booting.... how to prevent this is another question.

Well summer is a good time for me to go distro shopping. Linux Mint seems popular, although I never like Ubuntu... have to just start  running through em'.

Yes it is  ;)

Anyway if you still want to keep trying this wonderful distro, don't update the wifi drivers if it is already working.

Now if your wifi card does work reliable on xp we can discard a hardware issue.¿Why i mention this?,well because the mobile nvidia series 6 an 7 and 8 all have a known manufacture defect.(there were some revision that were manufactured some years after all thi fiasco that dont have this problem).

There are a couple of things that can be done to mitigate the problem.

This page has great pictures and recomendations (The reason for the failures explained in the link provided are only partially correct).

Hope you hang around with Pclinuxos and have times of joy and service.

Thanks but I will have to ditch PCLINUXOS, which wasn't what I wanted.  But I received no relevant replies to this problem, and no instructions in case I broke some forum rule. Like I said, I can't have a problem shut me down during the school year. In any case, thanks PCLINUXOS for getting me so used to Linux that I could never go back to another OS. Another distro is another matter.
