WARNING: update on kde4-config
« on: June 17, 2012, 06:22:14 PM »
This should be fair warning to inform users that updating kde4-config would reset your customization to default.

I just found out about it after updating a fresh install on my new netbook, but it isn't really all that problematic for me.  I don't adjust things too much, so it is easy to put them back the way I want them.  Just updated my main machine and updated to the 3.2.18 kernel, and it took me all of a minute or so to put things back to the way I like.

Thanks to the threads on the subject ......... I did an update last night which included kde4-config and when completed I noticed Dolphin had lost my personal settings ........  so I simply did the change on the two directories there and then and re-launched Dolphin with my settings back again.

All good

It took me SO LONG to get a KDE4.x setup with 6 Desktops where the icons stay the same across the Desktops without "locking" them - and the setup is otherwise usable in a "conventional earlier KDE" manner - though of course (I think it's now in directory or 'folder' view mode) - you can't have different wallpapers (I used to like using my own photos) per Desktop...

What I have now is working fairly closely to what used to be 'conventional KDE-Linux' for so many years - back when Linux with KDE was crisp and quick and bright and easy to use - and a lot of fun - and, as it took me such a long time to get it to this, I'd like to keep the setup. Problem is - KDE4.x is so convoluted and complicated that I forget how, over the weeks, I did it...

So - is there a way to "Save" the setup - then re-apply it after the update scrambles everything to what it thinks is "default"...?

If not - can the part of the update that does the "defaulting" be locked-out - but still allow updating apps?

And if that can't be done - is there some place that has "recorded" the settings I have now - that I can save to a *.txt file - then be able to re-do in a few days after the "defaulting".....?

I spent a long time with KDE3.5 as an "un-updateable" - I don't want to be trapped in a KDE4.x that I'm too scared to update...

Anything that can help with this will be greatly appreciated...!

Regards, Dave.

Rename .kde4 to .kde4-new, then rename .kde4.bak to .kde4, then log out, and back in. Your old setup with all your personal tweaks should return.

I had the same experience as T6 on my nettop. It was OK, as it was just a week-old install.  :)

On my netbook, I resorted to the shortcut way of restoring settings (.kde.bak --> .kde) .... just too many widgets and what-not's to configure. ;)

Archie,

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately, I updated before your post.  However, this has happened previously, so I figure it comes with the territory (translation:  I guess I'll live).  :)

It don't matter ... you'd have to update the package anyway or it will be troublesome migrating from 4.6.5 to 4.8.3. The fix is what is important. But let me just add another warning that we haven't net all apps that depends on 4.6.5 ... if you've encountered an app that you want to install and it want's to pull in kdelibs4-4.6.5, we'll need you to report these so we can fix them. There's 10+K packages and we don't have that many eyes. :D Thank you.

Yeah, same situation as T6. No biggy, nice to avoid though.
Hey really why wasn't the update simply posted in Software announcements, where most would see it ?

No Blame, No shame.

EDIT: 29 June 2012, 07:47:55
Actually resetting was good as it fixed a few 'odd' features which had grown by themselves within a couple of my Menus.  ;)
