lspci stands for "LiSt PCI".

I don't know what Ispci would stand for, but as it doesn't exist it doesn't matter.  ;D

"T6, I had already updated the BIOS on the netbook twice shortly after I got it using Asus's update utility. (Once was to increase the amount of RAM the GPU could reserve from the system, taking it from 64MB to 128MB.) However, I -AM- fully aware that a failed BIOS update can easily turn a mobo into a paperweight when I tried updating the BIOS on a fairly cheap one. (REAL problem was that the fan for the CPU had a broken peg and it was simply overheating. Tried to force a BIOS update because that's the conclusion I came to. Solution was to replace the mobo and get a 3rd party CPU fan. Wasn't pretty, but the mobo was a crappy one anyway.) And without that utility, I'm not trying a BIOS update. The only reason I even brought it up was to tell Ferdes that it's not happening anytime soon."

oh, ok, it is good to know you have experience on this, the last thing i would like is to see that you loose your pc

"Okay, I'll admit it... It was a PEBKAC... T6 has a valid excuse to strangle me right now"

strangle? no, never!

i was just worried that you had another problem with commands not working

about the temperature, system keeps working slow?  or just hot?

with what app do you see the temperature?  those are Fahrenheit isn't?

the desktop settings, that is not related to the kernel, it was a required step to prepare for the kde 4.8.3, you can restore previous settings by opening your home folder, renaming the folder .kde4 to another name and the folder kde4.old to .kde4

this makes the original settings to be used again and the new ones will remain in that folder you rename

Yeah, all temps are in F. I'm using the Hardware Temperature widget from Plasma, which is... HEYYY!? Saying that the temp is bouncing from 32 to 140+... (It's 85 in the room, and this netbook has a FAN, not a mini AC unit... Would be impressive if it did, but...) And that is BOTH sensors.

Problem is that the system gets hot, which is causing the slowdown. If the system stays reasonably cool, it doesn't start lagging like crazy.

I'm gonna need to try and find a temp. monitor in Windows... I'm starting to get the feeling that the sensors are shot...

i had a mainboard with that problem, later it didn't recognized ram modules

about video card, is it using the intel 810 and later driver?

If you benchmark the system while cold, and then benchmark the system
when hot you would have exact numbers to look at and use for some decision.

PeaZip GTK has one and my machine says it  does 655 MIPS,
Millions of Integer Instructions Per Second.    It's a standard test of the CPU
to rate the host system in terms of MIPS.      It's in Synaptic if you think
it might be useful.

Yup. "Module: ‎Card:Intel 810 and later"

Anyway, just did some quick testing in XP, and this is about to get WEIRDER... (But I'm happy that it might not be the hardware!)

Grabbed a temperature monitor from here and tested it earlier: http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ (It's the evening, and the air is much cooler. High 70s ATM at around 2am.) And it was saying there's one temperature sensor, and it was hitting high 80s after being left on for a while. Rebooted into PCLOS, and the utility opened at 120 degrees F. (Air coming out of the vent feels pretty similar in temperature, but the fan FEELS weaker in PCLOS.)

T6, I'll be trying that utility you linked tomorrow. FF, PeaZip GTK has been downloaded from the repos and installed. I'll try some harder testing tomorrow and see the RPMs/voltage usage the fan is under in both OSes, but I think something, somewhere in PCLOS just isn't using the fan at full power, causing it to overheat. (Man, I hope it's doing this to just me. Laptops are notorious for having poor ventilation to begin with...)

my toshiba reports 10c. less in xp than in linux, when xp says it is at 38, linux reports 48c

right now it is at 44c, 112f and i'm not doing anything with it but i have seen it at 55c, that is close to your netbook with the difference than your cpu is older and mine is a bit better at power saving, mine is a atom n455

Sorry guys, attention wandered and I got wrapped up in something else. That, and the problem seems to have stopped somehow... (Like the system finally recognized how fast the fan can run, or something... Darned if I know what's going on anymore...)

One of the sensors with the program T6 provided DOES match the Hardware Temperature Settings widget, and all the others were lower. I currently have battery reconnected and the plate on the bottom reinstalled. However, I have NOT reinstalled laptop-mode-tools.

As per coffeetime's request...

Code: [Select]

Thermal 0: trip point 1 switches to mode passive at temperature 82.0 degrees C

Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10

So... I'm going to go ahead and mark this as [Solved?], I guess. System isn't spazzing out anymore, but T6 might be right about using an outdated Kernel. (Would've been nice if Synaptic had let me know that a new kernel was out, but I guess I'll manually have to keep an eye out for it.)

synaptic mentions the new packages released when you press the status button on synaptic, that was the case for the last updates
